KEPCO E&C, Global EPC Leader

Signs a deal for the packaged purchase of equipment for a Turkish thermal power plant with SK E&C

KEPCO E&C has signed a contract for the packaged purchase of equipment for the Tufanbeyli coal-fired thermal power plant in Turkey with SK Engineering and Construction on Sept. 16.Under the contract, which is worth 100.7 billion won, KEPCO E&C will purchase and supply facilities and equipment, including desulfurizers, electric precipitators, and coal-handling systems required for the construction of the plant.
The Tufanbeyli project calls for the construction of three 150MW-class units in the Tufanbeyli mining area, some 350 km southeast of the Turkish capital Ankara. Last April, KEPCO E&C signed a design contract worth 18.6 billion won with SK Engineering and Construction, which is in charge of executing the project.
The latest deal is significant in that it is the first large-scale purchase project KEPCO E&C has acquired after declaring its bid to transform itself into an EPC company in 2009, meaning a company that carries out the whole process of each project ranging from engineering and purchase to construction.
KEPCO E&C has mobilized companywide capacity over the past few years to win orders in overseas EPC projects. By winning this project, KEPCO E&C is expected to accelerate its drive to develop projects primarily in the Middle East and Africa.
'NEW POWER, NEW STANDARD' - KEPCO E&C celebrated the 36th anniversary of its founding at its Yongin headquarters' large auditorium, as well as presenting its mid- and long-term management plan and a declaration ceremony for the new brand slogan, "New Power, New Standard," on Sept. 30.
The new slogan embraces KEPCO E&C's 36 years of key value and technological prowess, its pioneering spirit, and its promise to provide new power and a new standard to its customers. In line with its 2009 declaration to become a "Global Top 5 Power EPC Leader," the slogan also embodies the company's pledge to create new standards based on its technology in overseas markets, and to support its customers' efforts to achieve success.

Under the plan, KEPCO E&C is committed to achieving sales of 5 trillion won, mainly in the three major business areas of nuclear power, hydrothermal power, and new and renewable forms of energy in 2020, and to joining the ranks of the global top five EPC leaders, thus leading the boosting of national wealth through exports.
President Ahn Seung-kyoo said in his celebratory address, "Last year we participated in the UAE nuclear power project, and this year we are engaged in the EPC business for the construction of thermal power generation plants in Africa, thereby generating the momentum required to make a new leap forward. This impressive achievement was only made possible by the concerted efforts of all our staff members."
He said, "We should all be united in order to make our company more globally competitive," and emphasized again the need to explore overseas markets, to fulfill the company's corporate social responsibilities, and to exercise positive leadership.
An array of awards, including the regular meritorious service awards, quality assurance awards, and integrity awards, were presented to 36 meritorious service achievers. Prizes were awarded to winners in the brand slogan competition, plaques of appreciation were given to the best small and medium-sized partnered enterprises, and other prizes were presented to seconded workers. In addition, many employees gave performances as part of KEPCO E&C's musical ensembles and choirs in celebration of the company's 36th anniversary and the declaration of the new slogan.

PARTNERSHIP WITH AREVA
KEPCO E&C held the Second Management Meeting with AREVA of France at AREVA's head office and its plants in Jeumont and Salon from Sept. 5-8.
The meeting was arranged in order to continue developing the partnership between the two companies, following KEPCO E&C's contract with AREVA on technology consulting to replace the steam generators at Ulchin Nuclear Power Plant units 1 & 2 and to optimize power output, as well as to seek mutual cooperation in technology and project development in the domestic and foreign nuclear power plant sectors. The meeting was attended by 15 AREVA executives and staff, including the vice president responsible for operating the nuclear power plant business and a number of project managers along with five executives from KEPCO E&C, including the chief of nuclear reactor design and development.
AREVA gave seven presentations, including ones on the replacement of steam generators and nuclear reactor heads, and KEPCO E&C gave eight, including one on the design of a control rod driving device, while discussing ways to develop technologies and projects.
At the meeting, AREVA expressed its determination to participate in the EPC business in Korea, including the supply and replacement of main assemblies in the domestic nuclear power plant market, with KEPCO E&C as a technological partner. The two sides engaged in technology advisory discussions, including an assessment of load tracking technology, an advanced technology developed by the French company, and the reuse of steam generators from KEDO, on the understanding that KEPCO E&C will seek to implement EPC projects in the domestic and foreign markets by making the most of the partnership with AREVA and will introduce advanced technologies.
Going forward, the two companies agreed to maintain and boost their partnership, and to redouble their efforts to seek mutual development and expand their advance into the nuclear power plant business. nw
