Korea Midland Power Co. (KOMIPO) declared its new vision of becoming Asia's number one thermal power company this past February. The company has made its fullest efforts to help people lead an affluent life by exploring overseas power plant projects and ensuring a stable electricity supply in Korea.
KOMIPO was presented with the 2011 Korea Sustainable Management Grand Prize in Green Management at an award ceremony at the Choseon Hotel in downtown Seoul on Oct. 7.
KOMIPO is focusing on three tenets for sustainable management.
First, the company is attaching priority to exploring power plant projects in Korea and abroad. KOMIPO has established a solid foundation in the overseas power plant industry.
A case in focus is the coal-fired power plant complex project in Cirebon, Indonesia, being built by KOMIPO. The power complex will have four thermal power units, the third and fourth units of which will be operated for 30 years by KOMIPO. The power units are expected to be inaugurated next January and will be capable of generating approximately 15,610GWh, accounting for 9 percent of Indonesia's total power production and contributing to greatly easing a power shortage facing the Southeast Asian country.
KOMIPO is concentrating on exploring overseas new and renewable energy projects. The company has participated in the Wampu Hydroelectric Power Project in Indonesia using new and renewable energy sources.
The company has been actively carrying out power plant projects in Korea. It is pushing for the construction of the Shin Boryeong Thermal Power Units 1 & 2, employing an ultrasuper-critical (USC) technology with a capacity of 1,000MW, while a combined power and heat plant at Sejong City, the multifunctional administrative city, is under construction. In particular, the Shin Boryeong power units will be fitted with 13 advanced technologies, which make their steam temperatures and efficiency ratings higher than the Japanese USC-type counterparts. Incheon Combined Cycle Unit 3, which will replace the outmoded Incheon Thermal Power Units 3 & 4, will be built with the reuse of the existing facilities in what using the nation's first such engineering method, which will save as much as some 250 billion won.
KOMIPO is translating its green management vision of being a "super company taking into account the environment and human beings" into action. In an effort to realize the vision, the company has been implementing the mid- and long-term environment management action plan, dubbed "ECO-2015," with the goal of becoming a global top 10 power company in terms of environment management by 2015.
In particular, KOMIPO is striving to attain the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 10.6 percent on the Business As Usual (BAU) scenarios by 2020 by successfully abiding to the long-term renewable portfolios standard (RPS) and greenhouse gas emission plans.
KOMIPO has become the only Korean power company to have five projects put on the UN Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) list. The company has considered the entry of the CDM list even from the project planning stage. The company has been operating 30 new and renewable energy power facilities, including the Boryeong Small Hydro Electric Power Unit, the Yangyang Wind Power Unit and the Boryeong and Seocheon Photovoltaic Power Units.
KOMIPO President and CEO Nam In-suk in his New Year's message said his company will redouble efforts to secure future growth engines. President Nam said, "We expect to create new revenue sources as we have laid the foundation for our entry not only into Indonesia but also into Africa by accelerating our bid to expand business portfolios abroad during last year."
Looking back at last year's achievements, he said the launch of a project to build a replacement for Incheon Combined Cycle Power Unit No. 3 has paved the way for setting a milestone by "killing two birds (rabbits) with one stone ¡ª stabilizing the power supply in the Seoul metropolitan area and maximizing the utilization of combined cycle power facilities." nw
