Galaxy S II, Samsung Electronics'updated version of its top selling smartphone, has caused a sensation by surpassing the 2 million mark in the number of accumulative units sold across the nation only 73 days after its debut, almost halving the 144 days it took to sell 2 million Galaxy S units in Korea.
If the trend continues, the cumulative sales of Galaxy S II units in Korea are forecast to surpass those of Galaxy S units, which have so far totaled to 3.2 million units.
Riding on the wave created by the Galaxy S II, Samsung Electronics has topped the domestic mobile phone market with a 55 percent share. In particular, Galaxy S II units sold during the period between late April and July accounted for 45 percent of the total smartphones sold across the nation, helping the electronics maker play a leading role with a market share of more than 55 percent for the third consecutive month.
The remarkable performance of the Galaxy S II was owed to Samsung Electronics' How to Live Smart Campaign, which has contributed not only to communicating with clients, but also to enhancing its overall brand power.
The Galaxy S has been on a roll around the world, hitting the 10 million-seller list just seven months after its debut on the global market in June 2009.
Samsung Electronics said on Jan. 3 that Galaxy S topped the 10-million mark in terms of accumulative units sold around the world since the strategic smart phone hit the global market. It means that more than 40,000 units were sold per day, or one unit per second. Galaxy S is the best seller of any Android-based smartphone.
It is the second time a premium Samsung phone has surpassed the 10 million unit mark globally in seven months or less, following Samsung's mid-range full touch-screen phone, Star (S5230), which shattered the 10 million unit barrier last November, six months after its release. nw
