An insight into solutions to pending issues & new corporate management visions

The 57th Korea Standard Association (KSA) Summer CEO Forum that took place on Jeju Island from July 28-31 addressed such topics as Challenge, Economy/Management, Smart, Creation, Home Management, Leadership Academy, and Dream. The forum, held under the theme Choice for Being Super World-class Companies for a New Decade, invited domestically renowned experts from various fields, including Hwang Chang-gyu, former Samsung Electronics president of the semiconductor division and now head of the State R&D Strategy and Planning Team at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE).
KSA Chairman Kim Chang-ryong, in his opening speech, expressed his hope that the seminar would serve as an opportunity for participants to find solutions to the pending issues and take a look at new corporate management visions by sharing information through experts' lectures and discussions.
Lee Bae-yong, chairman of the Presidential Council on Nation Branding (PCNB), delivered her keynote speech titled The ROK's Brand Power Swaying Hearts of People Around the World. Lee was touted as a missionary of Korean literature for her part in explaining to university presidents and deans from around the world Korea's history and culture in a way they could grasp while serving as president of Ewha Woman's University. She is currently devoting herself to helping lay a solid foundation for Korean culture in the world as the PCNB chairman responsible for cultivating and polishing the nation's brand. The PCNB chairman says the nation needs to build its soft power by rediscovering the values of culture, essential for improving state brand image, and transplanting historic values into the present.
Kim Jin-sun, special ambassador of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games Bid Committee and a former three-time Gangwon Province governor who worked with the bid from the outset, spoke on the topic of Challenge, citing PyeongChang's finally winning the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympics after two losing attempts. PyeongChang's bid, which began with a public announcement in October 2000, took about 11 years to come true. Kim appeared in the final presentation session of the IOC general meeting and explained the Korean city's unswerving passion and determination to host the Winter Olympics and its continuous efforts to make good on its promises to the IOC despite two failures.
Kwon Oh-chul, the chief executive officer of Hynix Semiconductor Inc. gave a lecture on digital technology and virtualization. Following the first digital revolution involving the appearance of PCs and the internet, the second digital revolution unfolds in which digital networks become mobile modes, digital gadgets become smart and digital content is upgraded. CEO Kwon is doing his utmost in making Hynix one of the world's best companies by foreseeing the direction and speed of the changes.
Suh Yoo-yul, KT president in charge of household clients, spoke about the topic Smart Generation & Smart Home. KT's smart home strategy calls for creating a household environment in which contents are used for rest, education and work through diverse gadgets connected with a kibot, an infants'robot, smart home pad, TVs and other fixed-line and mobile networks. To this end, he says, KT plans to offer content tailored to meet the tastes of each household by using robots, IPTV and pads, based on its top-class fixed-line and mobile telecom networks comprising of high-speed internet and WiFi.
Lee Hee-beom, chairman of the Korea Employers' Federation (KEF), spoke about manpower and national competitiveness in the session on future strategies. KEF selected Lee, chairman of STX Heavy Industries Co., as the fifth chairman of the organization last year. Lee says KEF devotes itself to evolving a labor-management culture for ensuring co-existence and cooperation through shared growth, taking the initiative in creating jobs, supporting corporate changes and innovation for the construction of a fair society and providing information necessary for each company's bracing for a digital era.
Rep. Kim Young-han, chairman of the National Assembly Knowledge Economy Committee, lectured on the topic Go for the Firsts with Creative Imagination. Kim is a poet-turned politician. He established the nation's first traditional Korean style dental clinic as a way of securing economic self-sufficiency to become a politician. He spoke of the challenging spirit and passion with which he continues to conduct multitasking his various career roles. nw
