APR-14OO Reactor Installed at Shin Kori Unit 4
Ceremony held to celebrate the installation of the Generation III nuclear reactor system
Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) held a ceremony to celebrate the installation of the Generation III nuclear reactor system, APR-1400 (Advanced Power Reactor), at the Shin Kori Unit 4 at the construction site of Shin Kori Units 3&4 in Shinam-ri, Seosaeng-myeon, Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City, on July 18.
KHNP is now responsible for carrying out reactor design and overall design of Shin Kori Unit 4, which has already been fitted with the APR-1400 reactor, considered safe, economically efficient and proliferation-resistant.
The construction of the first pair of third-generation APR-1400 reactors, Shin Kori Units 3&4, will serve as a test run for the implementation of Korea's first overseas contract to build four nuclear power units in the United Arab Emirates. The UAE Braka nuclear power units are being built on the basis of the APR-1400 reactor.
During the ceremony, participants of the project pledged to devote themselves to making Shin Kori Units 3&4 a top-rated brand.
The reactor, measuring 4.7 meters in diameter, 14.8 meters in height and about 438 tons in weight, was manufactured and delivered by Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co. according to the design by KHNP.
The installation of the reactor is a key process of building a nuclear power unit, shifting from structure construction to mechatronics work. The concrete forming work for the reactor began in September 2009.
Shin Kori Unit 4 is to go into commercial operation in September 2014. If and when the unit is on line as planned, it will generate approximately 10 billion kWh annually, thus contributing to promoting energy self-sufficiency under the low-carbon, green growth paradigm with almost no greenhouse gas emissions.
APR-1400, a pressurized water reactor, was developed through a combination of Korea's own advanced technologies. It boasts being eco-friendly, cost-effective and safe, with an earthquake-proof design.
Shin Kori Units 3&4 are to be dedicated at a cost of 5.73 trillion won by 2013 and 2014, respectively.
APR-1400 units will cost about 10 percent less than its predecessors. Shin Kori Units 3&4 will be upgraded with nuclear power performance 2.5 times as high as that of the existing Shin Kori Units 1&2. Chances are high that if Korea's homegrown model continues to be upgraded, it will become Korea's mainstay export product in the foreign nuclear power market, experts say. nw
Notables, including representatives from Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Co. and other companies, raise their hands in a pledge to make Shin Kori Unit 4 a brand in a ceremony to celebrate the installation of the Generation III reactor, APR-1400, at the nuclear power unit on July 18.
