Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction wins power plant projects worth $3 bln in Vietnam

Officials of Doosan Heavy and Vietnam Coal Mining Corp. hold copies of an MOU they signed providing for the construction of four coal-fired power plants in Vietnam on Dec. 10 last year.

Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction has been selected as a partner in the domestic construction of coal-fired power plants in Vietnam, a project which the Vietnamese government is implementing, and is set to construct coal-fired power plants worth a combined total of US$ 3 billion.
Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction announced on December 20 that it had signed a framework agreement in Vietnam on December 17 for the joint construction of four power plants, each with an output of 600 MW, including Quynh Lap „°Thermal Power Plant (600MWĄż2), and Long Phu „±Thermal Power Plant (600MWĄż2), by forming a consortium with LILAMA, a local construction firm, and NARIME (Vietnam? National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering).
Doosan immediately signed a framework agreement for construction with Vietnam Coal Mining Corp., the project host, on the same day. It will sign the main contract sometime during the second half of next year. Doosan will also take steps to sign a framework agreement for Long Phu „±Power Plant as well in the coming months.
The Vietnamese thermal power plant projects, for which Doosan signed a framework agreement, are being implemented by the Vietnamese government as part of a plan to domestically develop and construct coal-fired power plant facilities. Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction will take charge of the design and engineering of the plants, as well as the design, production and supply of the main and supplementary facilities and equipment, including boilers, turbines and power generators. Through these measures, the company is expected to bring in advanced technology and help increase the proportion of domestic production by Vietnamese companies down the road.
As Doosan has become a partner in the construction of power plants in Vietnam, it is expected that the company will have the opportunity to become a preferred participant in the construction of coal-fired power plants that the Vietnamese government is pushing for in the coming years. Electricity consumption in Vietnam is increasing at an annual rate of 14% to 17% in tune with its fast-paced economic growth. Accordingly, the country needs to construct coal-fired power plants with a combined output of 3,000 to 4,000 MW every year.
Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction President Park Gee-won said, "Doosan's selection as Vietnam's partner has been made possible because the company, since its move into the Vietnamese market in 1995, has been contributing to the development of the Vietnamese economy, through such steps as the opening of the production plant Doosan Vina," adding that, "It is hoped that the signing of the framework agreement will contribute not only to the development of Vietnam? power industry, but also to the enhancement of Korea-Vietnam ties, as well as increasing the national interests of the two nations."
Earlier on December 10, Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction signed a contract to build the Mong Tung 2 coal-fired power plant, worth US$ 1.3 billion, as it is stepping up its operations in the Vietnamese power market. Participants at the signing ceremony for a framework agreement
High-ranking officials from Korea and Vietnam, including Hoang Quoc Vuong, Vice Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, and Seok-hwan Park, Korean Ambassador to Vietnam Dong-soo Suh, Vice President of Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction; Tran Xuan Hoam, President of Vietnam? Coal Mining Co.; Le Van Tuan, Chairman of LILAMA; and Nguyen Chi Sang, Director of NARIME
Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction (President & CEO, Geewon Park) announced on September 26 that it had recently completed and shipped four steam generators for installation at the Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant 2, and two nuclear reactor heads to be mounted at ANO Plant 2 and Waterford Plant 3 via its in-house pier at the Changwon Plant.
All these facilities will be used to replace systems at aged nuclear power plants. Doosan won the orders for the ANO and Waterford projects and the Sequoyah nuclear power plant project in 2005 and 2006 respectively.
The recent shipment marks the sixth time that Doosan has exported nuclear power plant facilities to the U.S., the cradle of nuclear power plants, since winning an order for steam generators for the Sequoyah Nuclear Power Plant 1 in 1999.
Kim Ha-bang, Executive Vice President (head of nuclear Power Plant BG) at Doosan, said, "By successfully concluding the project, we have further elevated our status as a nuclear power plant manufacturer in the U.S. market, which is expected to build further nuclear power plants." Doosan has been supplying nuclear power plant facilities - including steam generators, pressurizers, and nuclear reactor heads - to the plants in the U.S., including the Sequoyah, Watts Bar, ANO, and Palo Verdi plants, since 1999. Notably, in 2008, the company won orders for all the main items of equipment required for six new power plants in the U.S., which resumed the construction of nuclear power plants for the first time in 30 years.
