In Recognition of Awesome Achievements

Daelim Industrial Vice Chairman Kim wins Gold Medal for his leading role in tying down large plant construction orders overseas

Vice chairman Kim Jong-in of Daelim Industrial Co. was credited with leading his company in the area of overseas plant construction. The company jumped into overseas construction in 1966 when it got an order to build a harbor during the height of the Vietnam War from the U.S. Navy and remitted to Korea the sum of $45,000 for payment. In 1973, the company went on to win a project to install a boiler at Aramco¡¯s oil refinery in Saudi Arabia for $160,000.
Vice chairman Kim said Daelim, with its history stretching back 71 years, is a pioneer in the overseas construction market for Korea. In every foreign country in which it worked, the company tried to build trust in Korea and build a base for Korean construction firms from which to advance. Daelim Industrial is presently engaged in construction projects in 24 countries including plants, dams, harbors and residential houses, among others.
Kim joined Daelim in 1975 and was promoted to president in 2006 after going through various top positions in the company including head of overseas construction headquarters and the construction headquarters of the company.
In particular, he spent more than 10 years at the company¡¯s overseas jobsites including the P.H. jobsite and the K.A.U. project site in Saudi Arabia and the Qatar branch. From 1995 to 1997, he took charge of securing overseas projects for the company when he was a member of the overseas construction projects headquarters, frequently travelling to the Middle East and Southeast Asia to help boost Korea¡¯s image in those regions as a scout for the Korean construction industry.
In particular, as the real estate market deteriorated during the financial crisis at home in 2008, he led the company to make up the difference in revenue by securing construction projects overseas in such countries as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Kuwait, doing its part to support Korean builders. At the present time, Daelim is engaged in construction projects in such key countries as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait, Singapore and other countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
Daelim is also engaged in R&D activities jointly with the government, state-run companies, academia and private businesses on the development of various technologies and government projects, winning a number of intellectual property rights at home and overseas.
At the same time, Daelim has been at the forefront of training manpower for overseas projects and recommending regulatory and legal changes to support the expansion of Korea¡¯s overseas construction market share. The company also paved the way for Korean equipment and facility makers to relocate abroad to better supply their products to their customers, especially for plant construction projects.
Established in 1939, Daelim Industrial Co., Ltd., with its E&C (Engineering and Construction) and Petrochemical groups has been the flagship enterprise of the Daelim Business Conglomerate.
In 1966, Daelim became Korea¡¯s first company to work on an overseas construction project.
