KEPCO E&C Aims at Being Global Top 5 EPC Leader
Plans to expand its business horizons abroad
Since its establishment in 1975 with the objective of designing power plants, KEPCO E&C has played leading roles in the domestic power industry by developing technologies related to the design of nuclear power, thermal power, hydro power and combined cycle power plants and carrying out technology support projects.
In particular, KEPCO E&C has standardized the design of a 1000MW-class Korean-type nuclear power model and ensured safety and performances of nuclear power units in Korea. The company has been working on the designing of a 1400MW-class next-generation nuclear power model for the construction of Shinkori Units 3&4 and Shinulchin Units 1&2 as well as nuclear powers units being built in the United Arab Emirates.
In the thermal power field, KEPCO E&C has standardized the design of 500MW-class thermal power plants with enhanced safety and performance. The company completed the design of Yeongheung Thermal Power Units 3&4 with an upgrade capacity of 800MW last year, and it went on the development of the design of a 1,000MW-class standard coal-fired thermal power plant, which is now employed for the ongoing construction of Dangjin Thermal Power Units 9&10 and Samcheok Thermal Power Units 1&2 whose design is done by KEPCO E&C. The company is expanding its business horizon to such areas as power transmission/distribution, power transformation, comprehensive management of large-size infrastructure construction projects, environmentally-friendly, new and renewable energy business.
2020 NEW VISION ¡ª KEPCO E&C President & CEO Ahn Seung-kyoo unveiled its growth goal, dubbed ¡°2020 New Vision,¡± calling for a 10-fold surge in sales to 5 trillion won in 10 years to become a global top five power plant leader shortly after he took the helm at the company last year. The long-term plan was designed to create future bread winners by aggressively making inroads into foreign markets, departing from the past¡¯s passive business strategies arising from its 30-year-old monopolistic execution of domestic power plants.
Initially, KEPCO E&C plans to forge collaboration with KEPCO and other related organizations in exploring foreign markets to secure its competitive edge there. In the mid-term perspective, KEPCO E&C plans to carry out small- and medium-size business on its own and turn to a long-term business strategy to participate in large-size projects as an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for market entry and expanding customer base.
In the first of its globalization strategies, KEPCO E&C inaugurated the marketing division, EPC assessment team, procurement & purchase office and overseas business development office so as to reorganize its operation and reinforce manpower for exploring overseas markets. KEPCO E&C changed its corporate name from KOPEC to KOPEC E&C and unveiled its new corporate identity this past July to flesh out its plan on the EPC sector. The company also announced the mid- and long-term management plan, dubbed ¡°Rolling Plan¡± at a ceremony to mark the first anniversary of announcing 2020 New Vision on Oct. 1
KEPCO E&C, the world¡¯s sole company capable of designing both nuclear power plants and reactor systems, is striving to evolve into a global player by landing second and third nuclear power plant orders from foreign countries. KEPCO E&C, playing as unit and reactor designer in Korea¡¯s first overseas nuclear power project in the United Arab Emirates, plans to aggressively participate in consortiums, led by KEPCO, to export nuclear power facilities to such countries as Finland, India and Malaysia. KEPCO E&C is also carrying out projects on the improvement of research reactors and nuclear fusion reactors.
More recently, the company demonstrated remarkable achievements in its highly-advanced environment businesses, as well as the renewable energy field, including desulfurization and denitrification based on the know-how and design experiences of the company¡¯s environment-friendly plants which lead the low carbon, green growth of Korea. KEPCO E&C is looking to carry this prestige overseas based on its customer satisfaction ideology, where customer value is the top priority alongside universally-recognized technical expertise. nw
