STX Europe Does It Again
The giant shipyard delivers Allure of the Seas, the largest cruise ship ever built, to Royal Caribbean International
STX Europe, Europe¡¯s largest shipyard affiliated with the STX Group, delivered the largest passenger liner named Allure of the Seas to its owner, Royal Caribbean International, from its Turku shipyard in Finland on Oct. 29.
The new passenger cruise liner, ordered in 2007, is 361 meters in length, 47 meters wide, weighs 225,000 gross tons and is as tall as a 16-storey building, the ship builder said.
Chairman Kang Duk-soo said, ¡°We can reconfirm STX Europe¡¯s lofty position in the shipbuilding world as the shipyard successfully delivers the Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, both super-large cruisers, one after another to the surprise of the world.¡±
The shipyard recorded sales revenue of 2.2 trillion won in the first half of this year with 1.1 billion won in net income, turning itself around to earn a profit again. The company so far secured new ship orders including two super-sized cruise liners worth $4 billion, the chairman said.
Compared to the Titanic, which sank on its maiden voyage, the new cruise ship has five times more space, although its length is about the same as the Titanic and needs 100Mw of power to operate it, enough power for 50,000 homes.
The cruise ship is not only the largest such ship in operation, but also the most luxurious in installations boasting 2,700 cabins and an 8,500-passenger capacity. It also houses a crew of 2,100 hired from 65 countries and is thus aptly referred to as a floating luxury hotel on the sea.
An architectural marvel, Allure of the Seas spans 16 decks, weighs in at 225,282 gross tons, carries 5,400 guests at double occupancy and features 2,700 staterooms. Like her sister ship, Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas will tout Royal Caribbean¡¯s exclusive neighborhood concept of seven distinct themed areas which include Central Park, a lush, tropical garden the length of a football field that opens to the sky; a nostalgic Boardwalk, complete with a one-of-a-kind AquaTheater and Carousel; a floating bar that moves up and down between three decks; an innovative zip line that has guests racing across the open air atrium nine decks high; and so much more. Allure of the Seas also offers incomparable entertainment including Chicago: the Musical, The DreamWorks Experience and Blue Planet.
The cruiser¡¯s other luxury facilities include the Park View Guestroom, which has nice views of the sea and the Central Park at its balcony. The Boardwalk has restaurants and entertainment and shopping facilities and The AquaTheater is the place where the passengers can watch all kinds of performance such as musicals and water shows.
The ship also has a large movie theater that can seat 1,400 viewers and play 3D movies, and a large restaurant with the capacity to serve 3,100 guests at the same time.
