Samsung Unveils Galaxy Tab
Expects the latest device to keep the tradition of Galaxy S, which is enjoying popularity around the globe
Riding on the popularity of its smartphone ¡°Galaxy S¡± in the global market, Samsung Electronics has unveiled a new next-generation multi-media device, ¡°Galaxy Tab¡± at the global electronics fair IFA 2010 that opened on Sept. 3 for a six-day run in Berlin.
Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung Electronics¡¯ mobile business, said at a meeting with reporters in Berlin on Sept. 2 that Samsung Electronics hopes to have the tablet PC ¡°Galaxy Tab¡± maintain the tradition of the smart phone Galaxy S, which is enjoying popularity around the world.
¡°Global sales of Galaxy S have surpassed 3 million units as of Aug. 30 ¡ª only two months since its debut ¡ª and Galaxy S¡¯ success will be proliferated with the Galaxy Tab,¡± Shin said.
He said that the so-called Media Big Bang in which the existing analog medias are digitalized and such new media as social network services (SNS) have sprouted has been ushered in. It means that, for instance, people see newspapers via smartphones after getting up in the morning, watch TV programs and movies on the move and work through a ¡°mobile office,¡± he said.
Shin said the Galaxy Tab is a result of its endless efforts to develop products tailored to meet the new paradigm of the new media and the changing lifestyle of smartphone users.
Galaxy Tab is a next-generation media device in which such diverse contents as books, newspapers, movies, music and SNS can be obtained on the bigger screen than that of smartphones with the mobile connectivity of smart phones kept intact, he said.
The ultra-slim and ultra-light Galaxy Tab has such an optimum user-friendly environment as an easy-to-use user interface, along with its portability and mobility. The latest device sports a 7-inch, high-definition, WSVA-class screen on which to read newspapers and books comfortably and view such multimedia contents as photos and videos. The device is 11.98mm thick and weighs 380 grams ¡ª small enough to be put into a pocket and have no difficulty in carrying it with one hand.
The new tablet PC powered by the Android operating system allows such functions as Web browsing, video conferencing, imaging, navigation and augmented reality. It also offers the optimized e-mail function and three different kinds of hubs ¡ª readers, media and music. Samsung Electronics said it expects Galaxy S to be the Korean electronics giant¡¯s first 10 million smartphone-unit seller within this year, adding that the 3 million units of Galaxy S the company sold as of Aug. 30 were equivalent to half of the smartphone units Samsung Electronics sold during the whole of 2009. Samsung Electronics sold 500,000 units of Galaxy S in June when it made its debut, 1.2 million units in July and 1.3 million units in August. Korea, the United States, and European countries each saw 1 million units of the Galaxy S sold.
