Doosan-GE Cooperation Extends to Development of Advanced Power Systems
Duo signs an MOU to collaborate in the development of 1,560MW-class steam turbine generators
Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co. has teamed up with GE Energy to collaborate in the development of next-generation power generation facilities.
Suh Dong-soo, executive vice president and head of Doosan¡¯s Power Plant Business Group, signed an MOU with Paul Browning, vice president of thermal products for GE Power & Water, on the cooperation for the joint development of next-generation power generation systems in New York on July 18.
Initially, the agreement calls for Doosan and GE to jointly develop 1,560MW-class steam turbine generators, to be fitted with Advanced Power Reactor 1400+ (APR1400+), the next model of the APR1400, Korea¡¯s home-grown reactor. Korea is now seeking to complete the development of APR1400+ by 2012 and commercialize it by 2015.
The deal is expected to help the two companies gain the upper hand in the development of next-generation power generation equipment by combining Doosan¡¯s experiences and expertise it has accumulated over the past 30-odd years and GE¡¯s top-rated technological prowess.
Doosan¡¯s Suh said, ¡°The agreement will fortify cooperative ties between the two countries and it will enable it to gain a step in the development of the latest advanced technologies and advanced turbine generators, to be installed at nuclear and thermal power plants.¡±
Browning said the deal would provide the momentum for Doosan and GE to supply environmentally-friendly, high-efficiency power equipment in global next-generation nuclear and thermal power equipment markets.
Since 1976, the two companies have maintained collaboration in the power equipment manufacturing sector. They supplied 36 19GW-class fossil steam turbine generators and 13 14GW nuclear steam turbine generators in Korea. The two are now manufacturing 1,455MW-class nuclear steam turbine generators, to be installed with Shin Kori Nuclear Power Units 3 & 4.
Doosan Signs Contract to Supply UAE with Nuclear Power Facilities
Deal includes APR1400 reactors, steam generators, turbines worth $4 billion
Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction announced on June 30 that it signed a contract worth US$4 billion with Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) to supply the main facilities for nuclear power plants to be built in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The UAE nuclear power plant project, which a Korean consortium acquired from ENEC (Emirate Nuclear Energy Corporation), calls for the construction of four 1,400MW-class power plants, which will be completed one by one in phases beginning in 2017, at a site near Abu Dhabi.
Using its own technology, Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction will design, manufacture and supply the Nuclear Steam Supply System and turbine assemblies for the project, including third-generation APR 1400 reactors developed independently by Korean nuclear power plant industrial circles.
Geewon Park, CEO of Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction, said, ¡°The government and the nuclear power plant industry must join forces to develop nuclear power plants as a strategic export industry,¡± adding, ¡°By successfully conducting Korea¡¯s first project to export the Korean standard nuclear reactor, we will make important contributions to the nation¡¯s efforts to export nuclear power plants going forward.¡± nw
