¡®Nanotech for a Green World¡¯
Nano Korea 2010 with the IEEE Nano 2010 will take place at KINTEX Aug. 17-20
Thousands of renowned scholars, researchers and business figures in the nanotech field from Korea and abroad will get together for Nano Korea 2010 with the IEEE Nano 2010 slated for Aug. 17-20 at KINTEX in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, north of Seoul.
Nano Korea 2010 is being jointly arranged by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MEST) and the Ministry of Knowledge Economy (MKE) under the theme ¡°Nanotechnology for a Green World.¡± True to the theme, participants are expected to shed new light on diverse issues in the environment and energy fields facing human beings from the nanotech perspective, and the event will likely serve as an opportunity to share the latest research outcomes from globally-renowned scholars and exchange diverse views on how to solve pending issues. Kang Myung-soo, director of the Biotech & Nanotech Division at the MKE said the event will likely present both attempts to converge nanotech and other industrial fields and the direction of new convergence industries.
Started in 2003 to promote the commercialization and technological exchange of nanotechnology that serves as a foundation for all industries, Nano Korea will hold its eighth event this year. In particular, the 2010 event will be hosted jointly with the Nanotechnology Council of the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the largest association of electrical and electronics engineers in the United States. Many prominent nanotech scholars including Dr. Robert Grubs of the California Institute of Technology, winner of the 2005 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, and Dr. Peter Grunberg of the Julich Research Centre, winner of the 2007 Noble Prize for Physics, will participate in the event, reconfirming the global standing of Korea, which now ranks fourth in the global nanotech field.
The Nano Korea Symposium, which will coincide with the IEEE NANO in Korea, will have keynote presentations by the two Nobel laureates and Kim Ki-nam, president of the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology on Aug. 18. About 400 speakers will present their papers in a total of 14 areas during the four-day symposium, and about 1,000 tutorials registered around the world will be announced to be the biggest-ever one.
Among the plenary session speakers are Chad A. Mirkin, director of Northwestern University International Institute of Nanotechnology; Mihail C. Roco, the founding chair of the U.S. National Science and Technology Council¡¯s subcommittee on Nanoscale Science, Engineering and Technology (NSET), who will speak about ¡°Nanotechnology Progess and Future Opportunities: 2000-2020¡±; Eli Yablonovitch, a professor of Electrical Engineering at UCLA, will speak on ¡°Metal Optics, Optical Antennas and Spontaneous Hyper-Emission¡±; and Phaedon Avouris, an IBM manager, will touch on ¡°Carbon-based Electronics and Photonics.¡±
The NANO KOREA Exhibition will attract 240 exhibitors from 11 countries, with 430 booths and an expected audience of about 12,000 from some 40 countries in attendance. Such large-sized companies as Samsung Electronics, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, LG Electronics and LG Chem as well as KIST, KETI and ETRI and other major institutions will participate in the exhibition. The exhibition will be held in conjunction with Microtech World (The 3rd Micro/MEMS technology exhibition), to be co-hosted by Korea, Japan and Germany, and the 2nd Korea International Printing Machinery & Equipment Show with a conference to expand the scope of technology exchange and to maximize synergy between industries.
Nano Korea has emerged as the world¡¯s second largest event for nanotechnology with an average of 34 percent growth since 2007, serving as an event to build a network of nanotech experts and related officials. nw
