Korea Power Engineering Company, Inc. (KOPEC) signed an MOU with Senegal on information exchange, technology exchange and mutual cooperation in the energy field.
KOPEC President and CEO An Seung-kyoo inked the deal with Karim Wade, Senegal¡¯s senior minister of international cooperation, land planning and air transportation & infrastructure at the Lotte Hotel in downtown Seoul on Feb. 3.
The two sides agreed to exchange information; cooperate in the development of thermal power, hydro power, renewable energy, nuclear power, geothermal heat, electricity transfer and distribution; promote technology exchanges through mutual technology personnel visits; and collaborate in areas of mutual interest.
The Senegalese minister told his KOPEC counterpart CEO An that Korea¡¯s landing a nuclear power order with the United Arab Emirates certified KOPEC¡¯s global standing and expressed the hope that KOPEC would participate in the Senegalese energy industry, which shows signs of a rise in electricity demand. He proposed that expertise and experiences from Senegal and KOPEC would be utilized for maximizing economic benefits through KOPEC¡¯s participation in the construction of a 250MW-class thermal power plant.
In return, An said, ¡°KOPEC will exchange information, experiences and knowhow for the development of power generation, transfer, distribution and other areas of mutual concern through collaboration with the Senegalese government in the future. The signing of the MOU will be a stepping stone for improving a bilateral relationship.¡±
KOPEC decided to flesh out the specifics of the MOU through meetings with the Senegalese ambassador stationed in Korea and working-level officials. KOPEC expects the agreement to provide a good opportunity for the Korean company to enter the Western African market. nw
