EWP Reaches MOU on Foreign Market Exploration with Tata Power
Deal will likely serve as a bridgehead for entry into West Asia, the Middle East and Africa
Korea East-West Power Co. (EWP) signed an MOU on the joint operation and maintenance (O&M) of foreign power plants and technology cooperation in the thermal power and renewable energy fields with Tata Power, one of India¡¯s largest independent power producers, on Jan. 12.
EWP President and CEO Lee Gil-gu and his Tata Power counterpart, P.R. Menon reached the agreement at the Mumbai-based Tata Group Headquarters, based on technology exchanges the two companies have made for some two years from 2008, and they agreed to the joint exploration of foreign power generation markets, the promotion of mutual cooperation, the development of projects and the expansion of personnel exchanges in the thermal power and new and renewable energy fields.
EWP has built up cooperative relations through mutual visits and technology exchanges since 2008 to create new growth engines.
Last November, Tata Power proposed joint bidding for foreign O&M orders and the company was requested to prove field technology support and field surveys for all units of the Trombay Power Complex located in Mumbai last November.
Under the deal, the two companies are expected to carry out a wide range of exploration projects in foreign countries, based on Tata Power¡¯s high brand standing and EWP¡¯s excellent experiences and technological prowess regarding the operation of ultra super critical power plants and circulating fluidized bed combustion power units.
An EWP official said the signing of the MOU with Tata Power not only proves the global recognition of EWP¡¯s technological prowess on the global stage, but also indicates the fact that they have secured a bridgehead for their entry into West Asia, the Middle East and Africa.
Tata Power, with a power generating capacity of 2,719MW, owns a 3.7 percent share in the Indian power generation market, and it is India¡¯s biggest IPP with plans to expand its power generating capacity to 25,000MW by 2017. Tata Power, participating in business areas ranging from power generation, power transmission & distribution to power trade, is considered to be but on the list of most promising companies. nw
