Joongbu Integrated Logistics Terminal To Be Inaugurated
Paves the way for the establishment of a full-fledged logistics network in the nation¡¯s five greater sphere logistics centers
Coming next January, Korea Express (JIFT Co.) will partially inaugurate the Joongbu Integrated Logistics Terminal, dubbed an ¡°inland logistics hub,¡± which will likely bring about tremendous changes in the logistics field in the central sphere.
Situated in an area in Cheongwon(Cheongwon-gun), Chungcheongbuk-do, and Yeongi-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, covering a site of 480,736 sq. meters, equivalent to the size of 58 international standard soccer fields, the integrated logistics terminal will have four cross-docking areas, four distribution centers, a container yard and a container freight station.
The terminal will be put partially into service one year and five months after construction began in June 2008. Situated in the Chungcheong region, a national traffic center, the integrated logistics terminal will be no more than a three-hour drive from any major city of the nation and within less than one hour for freight delivery in the Chungcheong region. In particular, the terminal is considered not just to be located in an optimal location, a 40 minute drive from Cheongju Airport and a maximum of a two-hour drive from Pyeongtaek and Gunsan ports, but also optimal for importing and exporting freight with its integrated logistics and container facilities since it does not require additional charges for multimodal transport. It will establish a one-stop service system connecting port and inland areas so that freight can be transported directly from ports via a railroad network to inland areas and stored.
The terminal offers optimal rental services for occupants, giving discounts in rental fees to long-term occupants and giving additional discounts to those who rent large-scale space.
Korea Express (JIFT) plans to conduct a customer satisfaction survey on a regular basis to meet diverse customers¡¯ needs.
The inauguration of the Joongbu Integrated Logistics Terminal will pave the way for the establishment of a full-fledged logistics network in the nation¡¯s five greater sphere logistics centers, which will complement the ¡°Hub & Spoke¡± system comprising integrated logistics terminals for transporting freight in a more efficient fashion.
The multimodal transportation logistics terminal is part of the government¡¯s national logistics master plan to strategically develop greater sphere logistics centers with the goal of stepping up the efficiency of the national logistics system and creating national wealth under the vision of becoming a global logistics powerhouse by 2020.
The government launched a project to establish a radio frequency identification (RFID) infrastructure for an inland logistics hub late last year under the national logistics master plan. The RFID-based logistics hub information system is designed to help shipper companies and transportation firms automatically recognize the entry and departure of vehicles and freight and get a glimpse into flows by tracing their locations.
The ministry seeks to hook up ports¡¯ RFID-based systems with information systems of such logistics hubs as major railroads and ports, which is expected to contribute to improving the quality of logistics information services on freight imports and exports. Accordingly, occupants of the Joongbu Integrated Logistics Terminal will be allowed to reflect information on freight imports and exports in logistics plans and establish production plans according to consumers¡¯ changing needs. nw
