New Incheon Port Under Construction

Hyundai E&C and Samsung C&T-led joint ventures responsible for the construction of the substructure for New Incheon Port Container Terminal

The Incheon Port Authority (IPA) is pushing for the construction of the New Incheon Port as Incheon Port, a gateway to the Seoul metropolitan area, has experienced an over 20 percent rise in container traffic volume since 2000 and has emerged as a hub port in the Yellow Sea sphere.
The IPA envisages the future of Incheon Port as an international logistics network of Northeast Asia, securing the capability of accommodating large-sized ships in opening global shipping routes and developing the port into a customer-oriented, comprehensive port for the 21st century.
The projected New Incheon Port, part of the IPA¡¯s ¡°Vision 21,¡± a long-term plan for Incheon Port, will be fitted with advanced logistics network systems.
The project is divided into three parts: a container pier, an ordinary pier and a port backwater logistics complex. The first section of the container pier project is being built by the Hyundai E&C-led joint venture and the second section is being done by the Samsung C&T-led joint venture.
If and when it is completed as planned, the New Incheon Port will not just step up the roles of a gateway port for cargo to and from the Seoul metropolitan area and the central region as well as the nation¡¯s coastal areas, but it will also develop Incheon port into a hub port of the Yellow Sea sphere to brace for a surge in cargo volumes to and from China, Southeast Asia and North Korea.
The two joint venture contractors of the New Incheon Port stage 1-1 container terminal substructure are striving to make the new port an optimal one in terms of constructability, functionality, environmental-friendliness, safety, economic efficiency and maintenance by employing new construction methods, including one designed to prevent sea contamination, based on the experiences they have accumulated in the execution of prime port projects in Korea and abroad. They are concentrating on making the new port a top-quality one by sticking to fundamentals and principles and conducting thorough safety and environment management.
Here is a detailed look at facilities being built under the new port project.
PIER ¡ª Piers will be built as optimal solutions determined through an analysis of coastal areas to be prepared for a future extension of piers so that 12,000TEU-class large-sized container ships can be anchored. Caissons weighing 3,100 tons to 5,600 tons have been in place in consideration of the tidal difference standing at up to 9.3 meters and other external conditions and coastal characteristics of the Incheon area. Shore protection will be built in consideration of future site planning in an environmentally-friendly and efficient fashion.
DREDGING & RECLAIMING ¡ª Dredging will be done using 12,000 to 20,000 horsepower heavy equipment to accommodate large-sized ships and the dredged sand and earth will be reclaimed according to the nature of the land in reclamation sites.
WEAK GROUND FOUNDATION IMPROVEMENT ¡ª Ground foundations of the pier backwater areas will fortified in consideration of ground subsidence of the dredged earth in order to stabilize the ground foundation of the container pier backwater sites. nw
