SMIH Grabs New & Renewable Energy Awards Grand Prix

Deputy Minister of Energy Resources calls for the private sector to make aggressive investments

The Seoul Metropolitan Infrastructure Headquarters (SMIH) was awarded the 2009 New & Renewable Energy Award Grand Prix, Presidential Award in recognition of its role in greenhouse gas emissions reductions and energy preservation.
The SMIH is one of 17 individuals and organizations that were honored with the Industrial Order and other prizes at the 2009 New & Renewable Energy Awards for their contributions to the spread of new & renewable energy sources and the development of related industries. The SMIH was credited with contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving energy by encouraging the application of energy preservation steps from the design stage of public structures in order to expand the construction and utilization of new and renewable energy resources.
Kim Jong-keun, president and CEO of Kolon E&C was decorated with the Industrial Service Medal for jump-starting the new and renewable energy industry by developing technologies including geothermal power and photovoltaic power facilities. Hong Sung-min, president and CEO of S-Energy Co. was presented with the Presidential Award.
The award ceremony was held at the COEX Inter-Continental Hotel in Seoul on Oct. 29 with approximately 120 people participating, including representatives from government, industry and academic circles.
Deputy Minister of Energy Resources Kim Jung-kwan said in his commemorative speech, ¡°It is significant for the private sector to make investments in a preemptive and aggressive fashion along with government support in order to expand the spread of new and renewable energy resources and nurture the related industries.¡± He stressed that the government plans to invigorate the spread of energy resources befitting local conditions and expand support to step up technological competitiveness of photovoltaic power and wind power industries, particularly for expanding the portion of government support to SME parts makers in order to expand industrial infrastructure. nw
