ROTREX Showcases Latest Technology, Items

About 150 companies set up 450 booths at the fair












The 3rd International Road & Traffic Expo kicked off a four-day run at Songdo Convensia in Incheon from Sept. 23-26 to showcase the latest road & traffic technologies. A tape-cutting ceremony was held at 4 p.m. on Sept. 23 to officially open the biennial exhibition with hundreds of people from Korea and abroad participating. Vice Minister of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Choi Jang-hyun; Incheon Mayor Ahn Sang-soo; Korea Express Corp. (KEC) President Lieu Chull-ho, who is concurrently chairman of the Korea Road Transportation Association (KRTA); Malaysian Minister of Works Shaziman Bin Abu Mansor; and other ministers from such countries as Pakistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Tanzania; and REAAA President Yoo Kyong-soo.
Following the official opening ceremony, the notables toured the sprawling exhibition site with a combined exhibition space of 8,416 sq. meters.
The exhibition, marking its third occurrence, has been establishing itself as a major international road & traffic fair with the number of exhibitors and spectators on the rise since the first ROTREX was held in July 2005. About 450 booths from 150-odd road & traffic companies from Korea and abroad are participating in the exhibition to display their advanced technologies. Approximately 22,000 spectators are expected during the exhibition period.
In particular, the exhibition is forecast to have far-reaching economic effects: the value of Korean companies¡¯ exporting consultations is estimated at 500 billion won as well as production spillover effects worth 12 billion won and value-added induction effects worth 12 billion won for a total of 62 billion won, thus contributing to the reinvigoration of the local economy.
ROTREX 2009 is hosted by the Incheon Metropolitan City government and the Korea Road Transportation Association and organized by KEC, Incheon Tourism Organization and the KRTA, and it is supported by the Ministry of Land, Transportation and Maritime Affairs, the Korean National Police Agency, Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, Korea Tourism Organization and 14 others organizations. The fair is designed to prove an opportunity to acquire the latest technology trends and help Korean companies penetrate foreign markets, organizers said.
The exhibitors include Dasan Consultants Co.; Daelim Industrial Co.; Daewoo E&C; Sambo Engineering Co.; Samwoo IMC Co.; Ssangyong Engineering & Construction Co.; Incheon Bridge Co.; the Korea Transport Institute; Korea Expressway Corp.; Halla Engineering & Construction Corp.; Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co.; Japan Road Contractors Association; Taisei Rotec Corp.; the Nippon Road Co.; Incheon Metropolitan City; Japan Society of Civil Engineers; Road Engineering Association of Malaysia; Seoul Commtech Co.; Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute; The 17th ITS World Congress Organizing Committee; and Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corp. The exhibits on display are divided into four areas ¡ª road construction & maintenance, traffic signs & safety products, ITS & public transportation and parking systems & bicycles.
Fifty-five exhibitors, including KEC; Daewoo E&C; Hyundai E&C; Halla E&C; Korea Construction Management; Incheon Bridge Co.; Greencon Technology Co.; and Dongmyeong Engineering Consultants Co.; are displaying their advanced technologies and items in the road construction & maintenance sector, while 44 firms, including Daelim E&C, are participating in the road facility & traffic sign area Twenty-four companies and organizations including the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), are displaying their state-of-the-art items and technologies in the intelligent transportation systems (ITS) and parking system area. Attracting public attention is ETRI¡¯s USN-based vehicle detection system, a system designed to detect the movement of vehicles based on changes of the magnetic field, considered to save costs and be user friendly with easy installation, compared to the conventional loop detector. The ETRI T-Sensor Node, a wireless sensor, is a component of the system. The latest system is applicable to such services as issuing warnings against possible accidents.
A case in point is also KEC¡¯s booth with the latest ITS devices such as the HS-WIM, a system for checking overloaded trucks, and an omni-directional surveillance camera with such functions as 360-degree video-recording, and the UC-win Road, a driving simulator for designing expressway service areas using an on-screen situation. nw
