KHNP Signs MOU with Cambodia for Hydro Power Cooperation
Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd. signed an MOU with the Cambodian Ministry of Industry, Mines and Energy (MIME) for hydro power development in Phnom Penh, joining the construction of 7,252MW hydro power plants in 28 areas near the Mekong River.
The government of Cambodia, a country with abundant hydro resources, invited KHNP president and CEO Kim Jong-shin specifically for this MOU. With the MOU, KHNP plans to push ahead with mutual cooperation activities, including technical support to develop Cambodia¡¯s hydro power business.
KHNP has been making efforts to secure both overseas and domestic hydro power projects, and successfully entered the Southeast Asian hydro power market when it received an order for Nepal¡¯s 50 million dollar Chamelia hydropower project last April. Through this MOU with the Cambodian government, the company will gain an advantageous position for early occupation of the Cambodian hydro power market.
In the meantime, Cambodia is in urgent need of electric power generation, as it has difficulty even running factories due to frequent blackouts, with the country¡¯s diffusion rate of electricity being only approximately 18 percent. With the recent rising demand for electricity due to Cambodia¡¯s 8 percent annual economic growth rate, the country is pursuing the construction of large-scale hydro power plants around the Mekong River. nw
