Unam Chief Awarded Silver Tower
Chmn. Kim recognized for contributions to maritime logistics industry
Chairman Kim Young-sei of Unam Chemical Shipping Co. won the Industrial Service Merit Silver Tower Medal at this year's Ocean Day on May 31 from the government in recognition of his huge contribution to the country's chemical product logistics industry by importing five modern chemical product carriers, including the Unam Mercury, for exclusive use to transport chemical products such as xylene, ethanol, toluene, molten, sulfa and SM, all toxic raw material for petrochemical products, from Ulsan to the Yeochon Petrochemical Industrial Complex in Yeochon, South Jeolla Province, right on time.
The citation for his achievement went on to say that he helped immensely in the development of the petrochemical industry, a root growth power for the nation's industrial growth, by moving the raw materials and products in a timely basis, leading the exports of those goods to strengthen the national competitive power of Korea.
He also was given credit for recommending the restriction of new coastal transport vessels for two years from Oct. 1, 2003 to Sept. 30, 2005 to salvage the coastal shipping industry, which was hurt by the reduction of cargoes due to the construction of pipelines and huge increases in the number of new coastal shipping companies brought about by the changes in the licensing and registration systems for the coastal cargo shipping business. His recommendation saved the coastal shipping industry by reducing its losses and enhancing its competitive edge.
As vice chairman of the Korea Shipping Guild in the area of coastal oil tankers, he made a large contribution toward strengthening the operation of shipping companies by playing the role of go-between for the shipping industry and the government, recommending appropriate policies and changes in systems for a strong and sound development of the maritime logistics industry.
Taking advantage of his more than 30 years of experience in the shipping industry, he has been an international agent for over 500 ships that serve Korean ports transporting cargoes for such companies as Samsung Petrochemical, LG Chem, Korea Dow Chemical, Korea BASF, Hyundai Oil, SK Energy, Mitsui, Marubeni and others. His agency also represented six foreign shipping companies that call on Korean ports including Daiichi Tanker and Shokuyu Tanker of Japan. nw
