SK Energy has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) to conduct a joint research and development project on green energy.
Park Sang-hoon, president of SK Energy Corporate Planning & Technology, and Han Moon-hee, KIER president, concluded the agreement on March 25 in order to perform joint R&D on green energy to pursue low-carbon, green growth and build a mutual collaboration system.
The industry-research collaboration calls for joint research on such core technologies related to clean coal energy, bio-fuel and other new and renewable energy fields, as well as low-carbon petrochemical process fields.
SK Energy, which has designated five priority sectors related to green growth of the future, has been accelerating its development of future energy sources such as lithium ion battery technology, carbon dioxide polymer and clean coal. The company has taken the lead in research in the new energy sector as the company, becoming the third company to commercialize the lithium ion bather separator (LiBS) technology. KIER is the nation's representative government-funded research institution specializing in the research of such national research tasks as carbon dioxide reduction and treatment technology and high-performance hydrogen energy production, storage and utilization technology.
SK Energy P&T President Park said, "The joint research by both entities representing the technology and business section of the energy field will pick up speed in the research of new energy, and we will spearhead a drive to develop Korea into an energy powerhouse that can take the lead in the future energy industry through the development of such innovative technologies as clean coal energy and marine bio-energy." Meanwhile, SK Energy and KIER held a joint seminar on their collaborative research following the signing ceremony and made public their own technologies. The two sides drafted their research tasks and discussed ways of promoting their joint research and links with commercialization. nw
