For Synergy Among Affiliates
Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Samsung Electronics set up Samsung LED to continue to lead the emerging sector
President Park Jong-woo of Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. said the company has all kinds of technologies and products to use as a base to create a high-degree of synergy with other Samsung affiliates.
In his message to company employees as the new CEO, he said the company led the production of electronics products for the past 36 years of its operation in Korea and has accumulated business experiences in a variety of areas of electronics parts production, calling on all employees to continue to go all out to see to it that the company can post the highest results with the highest effectiveness.
The new CEO said the company cannot blame the business environment for its sluggish business conditions because he believes that the current hard time will be a watershed for the company to boost its position as a top global company.
Park said he will steer the company to seek new growth engines to strengthen the company's business capacity and find next-generation technologies.
The CEO said he will see to it that the company gives investment priority to businesses that will increase sales and profit and he will push to strengthen the management structure so that it can focus on finding new growth engines with speedy management, maximizing management effect and strengthening flexibility.
He also said once decisions are made, he will push them no matter what so that they will have successful outcomes, calling on the entire company to be like marathon runners at the starting line with limitless possibilities and passion so that they will rewrite the company's history at the end.
In the meantime, Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced that it will foster the ink jet print head and copper ink production as its new growth area with the company securing enough technologies to produce and market them.
Industrial ink jet printers are used in such industries as graphics, display and solar batteries, among others, and use inks made with copper, gold, silver and ceramic, among other high molecule inks, and are used in printing film, fabrics, displays and other products.
The company developed an industrial ink jet print head for the first time in Korea that can print directly on electronic circuits in PCB with copper ink.
The industrial ink jet printer is sometimes called the electronic ink printer. The inkjet printer head using MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanics System) has 256 nozzles, compared to 128 nozzles for the existing industrial ink jet printer.
The company named its new industrial ink jet printer "SemJet" and will produce it in large quantities and expand its uses to the semiconductor, LCD, OLED and solar energy areas by 2012 so that its annual sales would amount to 350 billion won.
The company plans to expand its business areas to energy, the environment and biotechnology in the future and boost the level of the existing business areas built around IT, while the industrial ink jet business will be continuously developed as one of its key future growth engines.
The company also plans to set up a joint venture LED (light emitting diode) company with its affiliate Samsung Electronics tentatively called 'Samsung LED' sharing stakes on a 50-50 basis with three of the five-man board of the directors of the new Samsung affiliate to named by the company and two by Samsung Electronics. The new joint venture firm will be capitalized at 290 billion won.
Major aims of the new company are to maximize the synergy effect of the two Samsung affiliates including Samsung Electro-Mechanics technology on LED and Samsung Electronics technology on semiconductor chips as long as LED remains a futuristic growth engine for the Samsung Group.
The new JV company is expected to make a large contribution to the company's performance results, thereby boosting its value and shares as the performance results as sales and profits of the new company will be reflected in the company's books.
The company aims at coping with the rapid growth of the LED sector and making the new company the top in the sector. LED is being looked upon to replace the current lighting equipment due to its low energy use, longevity and environmentally friendly nature.
LED is being expanded into lighting and automobiles in applications such as back light units (BLU). nw
