High School Student Spearheads
China Quake Relief Drive

Seventeen-year-old Lee Keum-seon has raised over 250 million won to help earthquake victims in China.

Moved by the devastating effects of the earthquakes, which took place in the Sichuan province in May, Lee and her fellow students at the Daewon Foreign Language High School raised KW2,512,838 over a period of 23days. Individual donations ranged from KW2,000 to KW20,000, showing how a grassroots effort can make a big difference in helping others. On June 23rd, all the funds collected were handed over to the high school affiliated to Renmin University of China, a sister school of Daewon Foreign Language High School.
"I'm fortunate to attend Daewon Foreign Language High School, which enjoys a prestigious status in Korea. But along with that prestige comes added responsibility. When I heard about the earthquake on the news, I knew that we had to do something to help. It is important to give back when we can, and the generous response from the students and teachers at Daewon proves this's Lee said.
Lee is currently in grade 10 (2nd year of high school) and is studying the Chinese language. Lee is also the vice-president of the Student Council at her school.
