The 83rd session of the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Council Meeting was held in Jeju from June 13-14.
Hosted by the Korean Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the session was attended by about 100 representatives, including Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Yu In-chon and 31 executive council members.
In his welcoming speech, Minister Yu said, "Jeju has a myth about a giant grandmother symbolizing its territory. Her body is Jeju's land, so nature and humans are one. We are pleased to see Jeju write a new myth about the Earth under the theme "Tourism."
The participants discussed such topics as a crusade against global poverty. In particular, they presented as a core task the establishment of strategies to implement tourism projects in consideration of climate change. The participants, confirming the fact that climate change would have an impact on the tourism industry, concurred on the need for setting the tasks for the development of the tourism industry while addressing climate change. They also discussed ways of expanding projects linking a focus on the regional development of the tourism industry and poverty relief.
Minister Yu met with such representatives as UNWTO Secretary General Francesco Frangialli and Indian Tourism Minister Ambika Soni, the current chairperson of the UNWTO's Executive Council, to discuss ways of promoting the tourism industry.
