Hwacheon, on the Front-line
of Machine Tools Development

Evolves into a global player of advanced machine tools developed with its own tech

Hwacheon has been on the frontline of the development of the domestic machine tools industry, which has greatly contributed to Korea's economic strides. Established in 1952, Hwacheon Machinery Works Co. has established itself as a Korean giant specializing in the production of machine tools. Hwacheon, the fourth-largest developer of NC machine tools following the United States, Germany and Japan, now churns out a wide range of machine tools through automatic assembly lines including automotive parts for such companies as Hyundai Motor and Kia Motors.
Hwacheon is expanding an automobile engine block fabrication line. It is capable of producing a wide range of machines, related to every sector of machine tools, ranging from cast-iron products to common-use and CNC machine tools and diverse parts. Hwacheon has evolved into a global player of advanced machine developed with its own technology.
Among the exhibits Hwacheon displayed during SIMTOS 2008 were the next-generation multi-task processing machine tools T2 series, super-precision mold processing machining center V3, high-speed mold-processing machining center SIRUS-UL+, high-performance vertical type CNC lathe VT-1150.
The late Kwon Seung-kwan, the founder of Hwacheon Machinery Works Co. and also the father of Hwacheon's Chairman Kwon Young-yual,
launched a tiny ironworks factory in 1952 at the height of the Korean War (1950-53) with his expertise and his career at a Japanese-run molding company. Initially, Hwacheon Machine Tool supplied iron railings for bridges undergoing repairs following the war and eventually expanded its business to iron gates for irrigation facilities and floodgates for ports.
Taking a look into the more than 50-year story of Hwacheon, it vividly demonstrates how the local machine tools industry has evolved into a promising export industry, making tremendous strides. An initial maker of motors and charcoal briquette-making devices, Hwacheon has now grown into a global player of a wide range of the highest-quality lathes, semi-NC lathes, milling machines, grinders and CNC grinders.
Hwacheon developed Korea's first NC lathe in June 1977; the nation's first CNC milling machine and copy milling machine in October 1983; and Korea's first NCTC in December 1988.
Hwacheon Machinery Works, Hwacheon Machine Tools, and Hwacheon Gear Works achieved ISO 9001 certification in September 1994, September 1995, and September 1998.
Hwacheon Machine Tools and Hwacheon Gear Works were awarded the EM Mark for Quality in September and December 1996, respectively.
Machine tools specialist, Hwacheon Machinery Works'Changwon plant boasts the nation's largest facility specializing in machine tool production as it has achieved vertically-integrated production capabilities in every area from cast-iron, a basic material in machine products, to finished items such as lathes and milling machines.
In addition, its highly organized system allows for completely integrated processes and enables Hwacheon Machinery Works to provide excellent machine tools, each a perfect example of Hwacheon's know how. nw
