Samsung Construction Div.
Looks Ahead to Next 30 Years

Further global expansion of nuclear power plant and construction company

Samsung C&T Corp. looks back at 2007 as a significant year because not only was it the 30th anniversary of its construction division, but it was a year of huge landmarks for the division's operations both at home and abroad.
"Creative Reform, Challenge for Exploration of the Next 30 Years,"was the theme for the company as it set out to make the year an exemplary year for achievements.
The company can count among its key accomplishments winning an order for low & intermediate level radioactive wastes disposal facility, the ongoing construction of Burj Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the Incheon Grand Bridge, securing the right to take charge of the project to build the Yongsan International Business Center and sealing record overseas project contracts.
The construction division wanted to upgrade the quality of its completed projects by investing unsparingly in providing well-programmed training to its personnel, improved technology and the reform of processes.
Based on the valuable experience gained in the past three decades of flawless operations, the company set the theme of the new year as "Creative Reform and Challenge, Peak for Sweeping Progress,"through reshaping the growth centers based on overseas development and plant projects and significant improvements in its competitive strengths. The theme also means that the company will step up the speed of its reform as a global partner to create a better value for mankind, nature and the future.
The company first jumped into the Korean nuclear power plant construction field in 1997 by taking part in the construction of Ulchin #5 and 6 units. The company has acquired a significant amount of experience in the nuclear power plant construction field despite being a late entrant in the business.
The company won the Nuclear Power Safety Mark from the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2004 in recognition of its advanced welding technology, FCAW, a departure from the existing SMAW welding technology, in building outside storage tanks for enriched water in the nuclear power plant complex.
The company also set a record by building a nuclear power plant in 56 months, the shortest time on record.
The Shinwolsung #1 & 2 nuclear power plant project units involves the construction of two nuclear power plant units with the power output capacity of 1000 MW in Bonggil-ri, Yangbuk Myeon, in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. GS and Daewoo Construction formed a consortium jointly with Samsung to win the project in 2003.
Samsung Construction is in charge of installing a core facility NSSS, a nuclear steam supply part, and is responsible for the entire construction process of a nuclear power plant. The company is proud of the fact that it was given such a huge role in the project, taking it as wide recognition of its well-proven experience and capacity to undertake the construction of a nuclear power plant.
The contract to build Shinwolsung Nos. 1 and 2 nuclear power plant units was consummated in July 2003, but construction didn't begin until 2005 due to delays in obtaining government approval.
The work began in earnest in June of last year, with such basic work as drilling the ground for the foundation of the main structure of the power plant and work on the water pipe system.
The company has been doing its best to cut the construction period and upgrade the safety and quality of the power plant so that the domestic nuclear power plant construction technology might be refined and improved.
In the new year, work on the No. 2 nuclear power plant unit will be launched with such tasks as drilling the ground for the foundation and basic work on machinery and the electrical system, keeping the company very occupied.
The Shinwolsung project has the shortest construction period in the history of nuclear power plant construction, requiring the introduction of the latest technologies backed up by the accumulated technological prowess and talented construction crew.
Ulchin Nos. 5 and 6 nuclear power plant unit, which were recently completed, could provide valuable lessons for working on the Shinwolsung Nos. 1 and 2 in various aspects to sharpen the capacity of workers involved, especially for those who are about to begin their careers in the construction of nuclear power plants.
The company finally contracted the project to build a low & intermediate nuclear level radioactive waste disposal facility project in June, 2007, following an intense campaign to win the project, including a tour of similar facilities in Europe and Japan and the collection of various advanced technologies used to build underground nuclear waste storage facilities in advanced countries.
The company is confident that its experience in building the Yangyang pumped storage #1 and 2 in Yangyang, Gangwon Province in 2006 would be of great value for the undertaking of the project. The company also completed the construction of the Chongsong pumped storage #1 & 2 in January last year. Both power plants required underground tunnels. nw
