Daewoo E&C to employ new technologies in building Shinwolsung

Daewoo Engineering and Construction Co. had one of the most memorable years since its birth 34 years ago, having become an affiliate of the Kumho-Asiana Group and retaining its position as the top builder in the country in terms of construction capacity for the second year in a row.
The company, as a brand new member of the business group, pursued the theme of the group, "Beautiful Enterprise for 500 Years,"creating synergy through working with other affiliates last year.
This year, too, the company has decided to work along the same theme to build a base for 500 years of prosperity for the group. The first step for the company to take toward meeting the target this year is to keep its top position in the construction industry so that it will be a beautiful enterprise with deep roots. The company will have a firm foundation to be a strong company through nurturing global talent in personnel and safe and sound operational practices.
The company will try to further solidify its image as a top-class enterprise through an acceleration of its operation as a member of Kumho-Asiana as it did last year by setting new records in construction both at home and overseas.
In line with the objectives set by the company, it will work hard this year to be more productive and effective than it has been in the area of nuclear power plant construction under a new vision.
At last, construction work on the country's first underground radwaste storage facility got started on Nov. 9 in Bonggil-ri, Yanbuk County, Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. It was the culmination of more than 20 years of preparation. Residents voted in favor of building the nuclear waste facility in the county, a significant event in the country's nuclear energy development history.
The nuclear waste storage facility will ensure the continued development of nuclear energy in the country as radioactive nuclear waste can now be safely stored in an underground facility.
Daewoo E&C has been building the Wolsung Nuclear Environment Management Center on a site some 2.1 million square meters in area near the Shinwolsung Nuclear Power Station, with the capacity to store 800,000 drums of nuclear waste. The first stage of the nuclear waste storage project with a capacity of 100,000 drums is being built by a consortium of construction companies led by Daewoo and is slated to be finished next year.
The facility will be the first one in Asia to be built inside a tunnel with technologies developed in Korea. Work on the facility will include the formation of an ecological park around the facility including an observation platform, a publicity hall and a park lined with trees to make the project a tourist attraction.
Presently, civil work is being undertaken to prepare the ground for the projected center and the construction of a tunnel.
The goal is to hold a test run in January of next year, giving builders a tough deadline to meet, judging from the project's current progress.
The project needs the help of the local community to be successful and, therefore, the construction companies plan to hire as many local workers as possible. The company will set up a home page on the Internet to facilitate hiring and the use of local equipment and material as much as possible.
The construction of major facilities for Shinwolsung Nos. 1 and 2 nuclear power stations got its kick-start in June of last year when the Ministry of Science and Technology issued a license for the project. Originally, the basic work on the nuclear power stations was to start in June 2006 and be completed in July 2007. The first stage work involved preparing the ground including drilling. The company tried hard to shorten the work period after the delay of the government's approval of the project.
The company worked day and night on shifts and completed the targeted work in six months, cutting seven months from the original schedule, enabling work on the No. 1 station to start in November of last year, unaffected by the delay and right on schedule.
As of the end of last year, some 18 percent of the work was completed with civil and marine structures 95 percent completed. Work on other installations such as deep water-pipe laying and the construction of roads are in progress. Work on building concrete and pebble production facilities have been finished and they are now in operation.
Early stage construction on the No.1 nuclear power station currently involves building the reactor cavity sump mat, tendon gallery wall, annex buildings and complex building, all part of building the main structure. Such temporary structures as a steel rod processing plant, an overall processing hut, an equipment storage house and a welding school have already been completed.
Also completed are the reactor cavity TLP building, reactor cavity sump wall liner plate and others. The company just completed creation of the CLP wall liner assembly plant and started work on the third-stage assembly of the CLP.
Work on the plumbing under the tendon gallery of the atomic reactor began by laying pipes under the wall, while preparations are being made for laying pipes under the annex building.
Electrical work on the tendon gallery's outside wall of the atomic reactor has been completed and work that follows will be launched on schedule.
Construction, machinery, electricity cable installation and pipe-laying work have been concentrated on the building for the atomic reactor. From now, work will expand to the annex buildings, complex buildings, turbine building and gradually to all other installations in the No.1 nuclear station complex.
Work on deep-water control facilities production and installation used for the first time for a nuclear power plant in its civil construction sector was undertaken with the help of the company's experience in building LNG storage facilities in Tongyong. It showed the company's technological prowess, alongside Daewoo E&C's technologies used to build a riverbed tunnel in the construction of the Keoga Grand Bridge in South Gyeongsang Province.
The Ceramic Facility Expansion Project was ordered by the Korea Electric Power Co. Nuclear Fuel Co. The project, which was launched in September 2006, involved the expansion of the No. 2 ceramic plant to upgrade the production of nuclear fuel. Its first-stage work included the construction of a building, air circulation system, fire prevention system and electrical wiring, which were completed on schedule.
This year, the second phase of the project will begin, which includes the installation of equipment and facilities imported from countries including France, Germany and Belgium in the radiation control section. The work for the secondary facilities for the sector, including the air circulation system, pipes, electricity and other work, will be carried out. nw
