Rep. Park helps candidacy and transition committee of president-elect

Rep. Park Hyeong-joon, a freshman legislator from the Suyong District in Busan, has become a national figure for his performance as a spokesman for the Grand National Party during the successful presidential campaign of Lee Myung-bak.
A former journalist for the Joongang Daily Newspaper, Rep. Park also played a great role as a member of the important Presidential Transition Committee, which was formed to take over power from the current government of President Roh Moo-hyun.
Rep. Park, true to his academic background as a Ph.D holder in sociology from Seoul National University, has devoted much of his time in parliament to social and political reform. A headline in a brochure called him "a flag of hope for reform to make Korea an advanced country."He is known as an academic politician, a new leader on the national scene because of his academic credentials and outstanding activities as a legislator, despite the fact that this is only his first-term.
He boosted his reputation as dean of the National Assembly Political Reform Special Committee. He swam through a sea of confusion in a political morass and stood up in the center of national politics, leading the committee's reform efforts, political sources said.
Rep. Park is also well known for his work to improve things in his electoral district, Suyong Ward in Busan. First, he cooperated with the district council in Suyong Ward to remove all of the pedestrian bridges over the main thoroughfares in the ward for the convenience of pedestrian traffic, which has since contributed to reducing pedestrian traffic accidents in the ward.
He was also instrumental in the construction of a multi-purpose playground at the Sumi Primary School in November 2005, the first such facility in the Gyeongnam area in Busan.
The legislator persuaded the National Sports Promotion Fund to allocate funds to create the playground, which has an imitation-grass field. The sports facility is used by students of the primary school during school hours and residents of the area on weekends.
Rep. Park also pledged to improve the ward in terms of tourism and cultural facilities. He pledged that he will do everything he can to develop the district as a culture-tourism area by expanding its tourism infrastructure linking the center of the ward with coastal areas.
He also promised to work on building a futuristic residential environment in the ward by seeing that various redevelopment projects in the ward, including the Samik Apartment Complex in Namchon-dong and others, are completed on time.
He also pledged to work on the creation of a green space linking Gumryun Mountain and Suyong River to make the area a resident-friendly living space. nw
