Director Shim Hyong-rae selected as "Figure of the Year"by KMA


Shim Hyong-rae, director of D-War, or Dragon Wars, was named the "Figure of the Year by the Korea Magazine Association (KMA) in recognition of his contribution to spreading Korean culture to the world by producing the science fiction film. Shim has been credited with opening a new chapter in the domestic science fiction film genre.
Shim said, "I' well aware that the award is designed to encourage me to make more efforts to explore the global market by producing better films, and I will work harder in publicizing Korean culture across the world."Dragon Wars, which ended its run in the American market on Oct. 18, raked in about $10.87 million or more than 10 billion won.
Shim still owns the DVD and pay-TV copyrights on the film. He said he plans to release the film in Japan early next year. He said, "The DVD and pay-TV versions of the film will be released next Jan. 8 in the United States and Europe,
and we are making preparations for the release of the film in Japan. We have begun preparations for the production of another film with shooting starting in March or April."His next film is "Last Godfather,"a comedy.
Kang Won-hee, CEO of Golf Digest, a golf magazine, was awarded the Order of Culture, Eungwan, in recognition of his contribution to publicizing golf.
Elizabeth M. Oh, president-publisher of NewsWorld, Korea's leading English-language magazine, was presented with the Minister of Culture and Tourism Award in recognition of her contribution to the development of the English-language magazine industry, the globalization of Korea by aggressively publicizing the value of Korean culture, government policies and corporate brands / people abroad while running the economic news magazine for the past 14 years since its inception in 1993.
They were among 14 people presented with diverse awards in celebration of the 42nd anniversary of Magazine Day at the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business Building in Yeouido on Nov. 1.
Magazine Day is observed on Nov. 1 every year in celebration of the publication of Koreas'first modern magazine "Boy"by novelist Choi Nam-sun on Nov. 1, 1908. nw
