KOSEP Gets Presidential
Award for Best Practice

Produces additional electricity by reutilizing water used to cool generators

Korea South East Power Co. (KOSEP) won the coveted Presidential Award for its innovative approach to power generation by creating electricity by reutilizing water used to cool generators at the Samcheonpo Thermal Power Plant.
KOSEP was one of 10 public organizations which were recognized with prizes for their achievements at the 2007 Best Practice Competition for Public Organizations on Oct. 11 in the auditorium of the Ministry of Planning and Budget.
Of the 102 public organizations that entered the competition, about half submitted entries for their innovative methods of performing their task and the other half for their innovative methods in the service sector. Following an initial written examination and a second Q&A assessment, 10 public organizations were selected ¡ª five from each category.
The 2007 Best Practice Competition for Public Organizations was designed to promote the creation and dissemination of innovative practices.
KOSEP took top honors after beating nine other competitors in the hotly contested competition. As the fifth speaker, Paek Nam-ho, chief of KOSEP's power generation division, took the podium to unveil KOSEP's innovative practice, which drew praise from the participating organizations.
Korea Credit Guarantee Fund (KODIT) won the Presidential Award in the category of customer service. The Prime Minister's Prize went to Korea Deposit Insurance Corp. and Korea Expressway Corp., while Korea Electric Power Corp., Korea Rural Community & Agriculture Corp. (KRC), Korea Broadcasting Advertisement Corp. and Korea Housing Guarantee Co. received the Minister of Planning and Budget Award.
KOSEP's innovative practice resulted from an idea to develop the technology to utilize the huge amount of water used to cool down the generators at the Samcheonpo Thermal Power Plant. For decades, this water was simply discharged into the sea. After numerous trials and errors, KOSEP succeeded in developing a 3,000 kW-class coastal tidal power station,
which produces 22,756MWh of electricity annually, equivalent to the annual electricity use of 7,500 households, adding 2.4 billion in yearly revenues.
KOSEP is also entitled to annual carbon emission rights of 17,000 tons, which are expected to bring about 2.5 billion in revenues for the next decade. In an effort to prepare for the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, KOSEP's development of coastal tidal power has proven to be an epic achievement in the new and renewable energy field. The coastal tidal power station has become the subject of attention for other power companies and other countries, including Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam.
KOSEP does not rest on its laurels. The company is striving to ratchet up its innovative activities with the goal of becoming a global power leader. nw
