Korea Becomes
ICAO Board Member

Elected to the governing body of the International Civil Aviation Organization for the third time

Korea has been elected as one of the 13 ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) board members during the 36th session of ICAO on Sept. 25 in Montreal, Canada. It is the third time Korea has been chosen for the decision-making board of the ICAO following the 33rd session in 2001 and the 35th session in 2004.
Korea ranked fifth overall in terms of votes among 17 candidates by garnering 124 votes. Korea received 109 votes to place 12th in 2001 and 125 votes to place ninth in 2004.
Prospects for the race for garnering a board membership were unpredictable since two or more candidate countries vied for a slot in the same region, said Lee Sang-ho, director in charge of International Aviation at the Ministry of Construction and Transportation. Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan competed in the Asia-Pacific region; Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates in the Middle East; and Uruguay and Ecuador in the Latin American region. nw
