LG Chem to Expand
Secondary Battery Plants

Combined monthly production capacity of secondary battery plants in Korea and China will increase from 28.5 million cells to 35 million cells

LG Chem, one of the leading South Korean chemical firms, is expanding plants capable of producing secondary batteries as a strategy to make this industry the growth engine of the company.
LG Chem announced a plan to increase the production capacity of a cylinder-shaped battery plant at the Ochang Tech Park in North Chungcheong Province to 4.5 million cells and a polymer battery plant in Nanjing, China to 2 million cells.
If they are expanded as planned, LG Chem's secondary battery production capacity will rise from current 28.5 million cells to 35 million cells per month in the second half of next year.
LG Chem plans to boost the production capacity of a cylinder-shaped battery plant at Ochang Tech Park in North Chungcheong Province to 4.5 million cells by the first half of next year. LG Chem is set to have a combined production capacity of 15 million cells per month - 13 million cells in Korea and 2 million cells abroad.
Officials from LG Chem said LG Chem decided to expand cylinder-shaped battery plants to meet rising demands. The demand for cylinder-shaped batteries is on the rise due to a continued growth of the notebook PC market and a boost in demands from HP and other major clients.
LG Chem said the company's cylinder-shaped battery production liners are operated at full capacity and it is considering building additional production lines.
In the meantime, LG Chem expanded the production capacity of the polymer battery plant in Nanjing by 1 million cells per month, and it plans to build an additional line capable of producing 1 million cells per month in the second half of this year.
LG CHEM INTEGRATES PVC BUSINESS IN CHINA. LG Chem has completed construction of a plant that is capable of producing vinyl chloride monomer (VCM) and ethylene dichloride (EDC), the raw materials of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), in Tianjin, China in an effort to strengthen the competitiveness of the PVC business.
A ceremony marking the dedication of the LG Bohai Chemical plant capable of producing 350,000 tons per annum was held in Tianjing on September 7th with about 500 people, including LG Chem President Kim Bahn-suk and LG Chem as well as Chinese officials and Bohai Chemical officials participating.
In 2004, LG Chem agreed to make an investment into a VCM/EDC plant and set up a production incorporated company, Tianjing LG Bohai Chemical Co. A VCM plant with an annual capacity of 350,000 tons and an EDC plant with an annual capacity of 300,000 tons have been dedicated with a combined investment of $300 million.
As a result, LG Chem has integrated the PVC business in China, ranging from ethylene, one of basic raw materials, to EDC/VCM (LG Bohai plant) and PVC. nw
