On display at Deoksu Palace Art Museum in downtown Seoul until Sept. 30
Adisplay of some 64 odd paintings dated from 16th to 17th century from the collection of Hapsburg House which ruled the Austrian Empire for over 5 centuries will last from June 26 until Sept. 30 at Deoksu Art Museum inside Deoksu Palace in downtown Seoul. The master pieces includes various work done in various genres of paintings such as renaissance, baroque and rococo, representing the ages when those styles were in vogue. Great painters of the ages include Rembrandt, Rubens, Velasquez, Van Dyke, Tichiano and others. On display are Rembrandt's painting of his son, 'Titus'Velasquez's 'Princess Maria Teresa'and Rubens 'Simon and Efgenia'based on Bocaccio's Decameron.
The art museum said the viewers will enjoy appreciating the dynamic and glorious work of baroque paintings, which were developed with the backing of powerful rulers and the Catholic church. The work also shows the history of European art along with the political history of the region as they are part of the famous Hapsburg Collection,
some of the most outstanding pieces of paintings of the Hapsburg era.
The pieces on display include the paintings of Greek and Roman myths in various techniques and sensualities, some Biblical passages as themes, giving the viewers typical religious views and the spirit of the age. The viewers will be able to apply their lessons on European paintings history learned at school with the real painting work of those European painters they saw at the museum in Deoksu Palace. On the ground floor of the museum are the first and second exhibition halls and the third and fourth exhibition halls are located on the second floor.
The Hapsburg House began to gain power in the 13th century in Europe and in the 15th Century, they took over the position of the Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and continue to dominate Europe until the 19th century when the first World War came to an end.
The art work collected by Hapsburg emperors down through the ages were turned over to the Vienna Art History Museum by Franz Josef I. The museum went along with ups and downs of the Hapsburg House in history, reflecting glory and the down time of the royalty. The powerful royal rulers invited famous painters to their palaces to buy their work in a display of their wealth and power. Therefore, watching the changes in the famous paintings in the period between the 15th-18th centuries in Europe can learn the rise and fall of the rulers in the ages through the history of art. nw
