WP Puts into Operation Taean
Thermal Power Plant Units 7&8
Participates in a mine-mouth power plant project in Indonesia
Korea Western Power Co. (WP) inaugurated Taean Thermal Power Plant Units No. 7 and 8 with a design output capacity of 550,000 kW, a 10 percent improved version of the existing 500,000 kW-class super critical power unit.
Among the 300 participants in the dedication ceremony of the newly built units within the Taean Power Plant Complex in Banggal-ri, Wonbuk-myeon, Taean-gun, South Chungcheong Province, were Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy Kim Young-joo, South Chungcheong Province Gov. Lee Wan-goo, KEPCO Chairman-CEO Lee Won-gul and residents in the neighborhood.
The Taean Thermal Power Plant Complex is located in the West Coast near the Seoul Metropolitan area to contribute to stabilizing power supply to the Seoul Metropolitan area, and in particular, the dedication of the two units came 8 months earlier than scheduled to cope with a demand peak during the summer of 2007.
The newly built power units were designed by KOPEC,
while Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction was responsible for supplying equipment and devices and construction. The project began in November 2003 and was completed in some three years and nine months after pouring 1,189.7 billion won and 2 million man-days.
The units are expected to offer a base load power capacity of 6,132 million kWh per annum.
They are equipped with such eco-friendly facilities as flue-gas desulfurization and denitrification facilities that could reduce air pollutant emissions below half of the permissible levels. The latest thermal power units have no ash treatment centers, setting an example of upgrading the technology for constructing power plants.
WP provides financial support worth 4.5 billion won per annum in the form of projects designed to boost neighborhood residents'income, subsidize their electricity charges and scholarship programs.
WP President Shon Dong-hee, who was conferred on the Order of Industrial Merit, Silver Tower, of the new president's term.
was among the 39 WP and other related company officials who received prizes in recognition of their contribution to the dedication of the latest power units.
WP's MOU ON COAL-FIRED POWER PROJECTS IN INDONESIA. WP participates in a mine-mouth power plant project in Indonesia.
A consortium of WP, Hanwha Engineering & Construction and Raja Wali Koresia inked an MOU with Indonesian power corporation PLN on a 400,000 kW-class mine mouth power plant in Seoul Shilla Hotel on July 25.
The agreement was signed during an energy forum between Korea and Indonesia in which Vice Minister for Energy Lee Jae-hoon and Indonesian energy and mineral resources minister participated.
The Korean consortium has already conducted construction site and business feasibility studies on the mine mouth power project in southern Sumatra.
This past March, the Indonesian Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry and Sumatra state government held a business session on the project, while the Korean consortium submitted a business proposal to PLN calling for inclusion of the project in Indonesia's long-term power supply plan.
WP officials said the project has been upgraded into a business approved by Korean and Indonesian governments and the Korean consortium has established a bridgehead for negotiating a power purchase agreement with PLN. The Korean consortium plans to work on such details as environmental impact assessment. nw
