SK E&C Building part of
Yongin-Seoul Expressway

Responsible for the construction of the sixth section of the expressway

A project to build a 22.9 km-long expressway between Yongin, Gyeonggi Province and the Heonneung Street in Gangnam-gu, Seoul is being undertaken as part of efforts to create an expressway network designed to improve traffic conditions south of the Seoul Metropolitan area and refurbish the traffic systems of the metropolitan area. The planned expressway is to be dedicated at the end of June 2009 at a cost of about 900 billion won.
The project takes the form of a private participation infrastructure (PPI) project. The concessionaire of the BTO (Build-Transfer-Operate) project, tentatively named "Gyeongsu Expressway Co.,"is responsible for the designing and building of the expressway, and the concessionaire is awarded with the right to operate the expressway for 30 years in exchange for handing over its ownership to the government. Seven construction companies, including SK E&C, participate in the PIP project. SK E&C takes charge of the last and sixth construction section of the expressway project.
The sixth construction section will include two tunnels, each more than 1km in length, a medium-size tunnel and eight bridges, large and small. It will cost about 150 billion won. New technologies and construction methods will be employed for the purpose of eco-friendly construction of the sections, which will go through metropolitan expressway network and villages and mountains in the vicinity of Seoul. In particular, SK E&C will capitalize on the experience and expertise it has accumulated over the past 30 years to construct the two long tunnels, which are expected to have a great impact on the construction period and quality. Its accumulated know-how in the construction of large-size tunnel will make the expressway a convenient and safe one, SK E&C officials said.
When it is opened to traffic, the planned Yongin-Seoul expressway is forecast to have a traffic load of 100,000 vehicles. It is expected to save traffic congestion costs by curtailing the travel time between Yongin and Seoul as well as contributing to the development of the district. It will likely absorb an overload of traffic volume on the nearby Gyeongbu (Seoul-Busan) Expressway, thus retrieving the original role of the expressway.
