Samsung E&C clinches order to build Palm Jebel Ali Bridge in Dubai for $350 mln
Samsung Engineering & Construction, a division of Samsung Corp., is to take on the construction of man-made island project in Dubai by building the Palm Jebel Ali Bridge ordered by Nakheel Co. on a turnkey basis. Officials of the company said the order was just given to the company in recognition of its construction capabilities shown in its undertaking of the construction of Burj Dubai building, the world's tallest building when completed 452 meter high.
The project worth $350 million is to build the 8-lane bridge connecting the man-made islands and the continent divided into two sections, one 1.2 km and the other 1.45 km with a total length of 4.17 km and two other segments connecting the interior of the man-made islands some 380 meters long, one with 4 lanes and the other with 6 lanes. The construction is to be completed in 44 months until November, 2010.
Palm Jebel Ali is recognizable from the Moon due to its large scale and considered to be the 8th wonders of the world. It has a root section, 17 palm leaves,
and the shape of new moon breakwater. Its 7.5 km cross and 2.5 km wide being built at the cost of $3 billion.
Nakheel Co. is one of the three biggest developers in the United Arab Emirates along with Emarr and Aldar. The company is in the middle of undertaking a number of huge projects such as the Palm Jumei, Palm Deira, and Palm Jebel Ali, a man-made islands shaped like a palm tree leaves and a globe shape, the World, which have been drawing sharp world attention because of its sheer scale and the cost-projected at some $20 billion.
Samsung Trading provided pre-construction service to the project owner from the beginning including basic designing, detailed designing, type of bridges, construction period calculation and estimation of costs, winning the recognition for its service quality. Its capabilities shown during the construction of Burj Dubai and the Incheon Grand Bridge have been recognized as tops in the world, which led the company being the sole bidder for the projected bridge.
Samsung is determined to show its technological prowess that it acquired in building the Incheon Grand Bridge, the longest cable stayed high-tech bridge in the country and the Yeongjong Grand Bridge, the longest suspended bridge in Korea, when taking on the project.
An official of Samsung Trading Overseas Business Headquarters, said they feel a great pride that their company has been named to undertake the project, drawing world attention, part of the Palm Jebel Ali man-made island project. They feel it is the result of the company's winning the recognition for its building capabilities in building the Burj Dubai. They will undertake the project with the sense of a mission that they will be able to show the world their technological prowess gained from the construction of the Incheon Grand Bridge and the Yeongjong Grand Bridge.
Samsung has been put in a good position to win additional project orders coming out of the area due to its winning the huge projects from such powerful developers as Emarr, and Nakheel in Dubai as they will ordering projects for large bridges and super high buildings in the future thanks to the services the company provided such as technologies and software. The company won the Burj Dubai project from Emarr and the Palm Jebel Ali bridge project from Nakheel putting itself in a superb position to win additional project orders in the Arab country.
The company's overseas orders have been coming in very well, already winning some $935 million worth of orders overseas including Island Power Plant construction project in Singapore, and the project to build offices in Burj Dubai.
The company has been doing so well that early in the year, Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee stopped by Dubai on a leg of his world tour to encourage the workers at the job site.
The chairman also called on important UAE government officials and private business leaders to show that his company will do a good job on any kind of projects it has secured and complete them as scheduled. nw
