Samsung SDI Develops
World's Thinnest AMOLED
Claims the world's thinnest AMOLED is much lighter, brighter, more energy-efficient
Samsung SDI has developed the world's thinnest 2.2-inch Active-Matrix Organic Light Emitting Diode (AMOLED) display. The latest AMOLED panel, which is 0.52 mm thick, is equivalent of the 0.48 mm thickness of a business card and brighter, Samsung SDI announced on May 17.
The AMOLED panel has a strong point of producing a panel with the thickness of a paper because the Back Light Unit is not necessary. Additionally, Samsung SDI's own Module Slimming technology, including the top-rated etching technology, has been employed. Samsung SDI's latest AMOLED has one-third of the thickness of the existing mass-produced 17mm-thick TFT-LCD module, the company said.
The latest AMOLED panel, 12mm thinner than the existing ones, offers new opportunities for mobile gadgets because they are slimmer and they may have unlimited uses like a rise in battery capacity and adoption of new functions like DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting).
It was in 2005 that Samsung SDI has begun the mass production of AMOLED for the first time in the world.
Several electronics makers, including Sony and CMO of Taiwan, have been announced their plans to enter the global AMOLED market. Samsung SDI's development of the thinnest 0.52mm-thick AMOLED panel has reaffirmed the company's solid position in the global leader of the OLED field.
The newest 2.2-inch AMOLED panel has a QVGA (240x320)-class resolution and a contrast ratio of 10,000:1. It is twice as thin as the 2.2-inch AMOLED panel put on the test of the market, but has the same functions.
The latest AMOLED panel will be unveiled together with 2.6-inch QVGA (240x320) AMOLED and 2.8-inch LQVGA (240x400) AMOLEd panels during 45th annual Society for Display (SID) 2007 exhibition being held here May 22-24 in Long Beach.
In December 2005, Samsung SDI announced a plan to mass-produce the four-generation Low-Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS), top-emission AMOLED panel with an investment of 465.5 billion won. The project to construct a 13,800-pyeong line for the exclusive production of the AMOLED panels is almost complete, and trail production of the panel and market testing are conducted simultaneously for the purpose of the mass production.
Samsung SDI has been expanding its presence to the markets for DMB and PMP and gamers in stages after initially entering the AMOLED market for QVGA-class mobile phones with a size ranging from 2.0 inch to 3.0 inch. The company plans to increase production to 100 million units per annum by 2008.
In a related development, in a speech during a ceremony marking the 37th anniversary Samsung SDI President Kim Sun-taek urged his officers and staff members to create a new myth after overcoming the recent hardships, saying that honorable myths are not destined, but created.
Samsung SDI President Kim suggested a new vision of repositioning the company as a world-class display maker in Suwon, the mecca of color Braun tube business on the occasion of the 37th anniversary. Kim said, "It is significant that Samsung SDI hold the 37th anniversary in Suwon, the place for making history of SDI, after relocating its headquarters, and a recollection of the past 37 years shows lots of glory and footmarks." nw
