HDEC, Builder of Mega-Bridges over Han River

Hyundai Engineering and Construction Corporation (HDEC) has become the final winner of the Public Procurement Service's (PPS) bidding for the construction of the planned Amsa Bridge on March 14 last year thanks to excellent construction capability and vast experiences it has accumulated in the bridge construction sector.
The project placed by the PPS in place of the Seoul Construction Safety Management Headquarters calls for the construction of the 1.3 km-long Amsa Bridge with four to six lanes spanning between Deunchon-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, and Acheon-dong, Guri City, at a cost of 150 billion won. The bridge, which broke ground in April 2006, is scheduled to be completed by 2011.
When it is completed, the bridge will contribute to the flow of the traffic on the Olympic Road, Cheonho Bridge and the Northern Gangbyeon (Riverside) Road. It will also reduce the travel distance between Seoul and Guri/Namyangju.
The arch-type bridge will be connected with the Northern Gangbyeon Road by the Acheon Interchange (IC) north of the Han River, while it will be linked to the Olympic Road by the Amsa IC south of the river. The bridge will also linked with Mt. Acha and Yongma tunnels, which are to be completed almost simultaneously, thus easing the bottle necks in Gangdong, Gwangjin and Jungnyang areas.
The new bridge will be the 24th to be built over the Han River, except railway bridges. The projected Amsa Bridge will be the 11th bridge to be built by Hyundai Engineering and Construction, which has made history by having constructed more than half of the existing bridges.
Starting with the construction of the Hangang (Han River) Pedestrian Bridge in 1957, HDEC has built up its own epochal bridge construction capabilities by building such mega-bridges as Yanghwa, Mapo, Jamsil and Seongsan bridges during the period between the 60s to 80s.
Entering the 90s, HDEC has carried out bridge work like the rehabilitation project of the collapsed Seongsu Bridge, Seogang Bridge and Gayang Bridge. HDEC has become a familiar name in the construction of bridges over the Han River as it has also dedicated projects to improve Jamsil, Seongsu and Hannam bridges during 2004 and the Mapo Bridge in 2005. nw
