KOPEC (Korea Power Engineering Company, Inc.) is a world-class engineering company specializing in developing and designing nuclear power plants. It was in 1987 that KOPEC became Korea's first company as the prime contractor for the design of Yonggwang Units 3&4. The company has achieved its technological self-reliance by designing some 20 nuclear power plants, including Ulchin Units 3, 4, 5, & 6 and Yonggwang 5&6. In particular,
the company completed the Korean standard reactor OPR1000 project with the design of Ulchin nuclear power units 3&4 to catapult Korea into the ranks of global powerhouses. KOPEC's endless technology development has allowed the company to comp up with APR1400, an upgraded version of OPR1000. APR1400, developed as the next-generation nuclear reactor, is being applied to the construction of Shin-Kori Units 3&4, now under way. If construction and start-up operation of the APR1400 units prove to be a success, the upgraded version is expected to contribute not only to a stable supply of electricity in Korea but also to making nuclear power technology exports competitive. APR1400, evaluated to be comparable to that of global nuclear energy powerhouses in safety, economic efficiency and technology aspects, casts a bright light on the future of the domestic nuclear energy industry.
KOPEC's technology prowess extends not only the NPP sector, but the design of thermal power plants. The company, which has accumulated expertise with the design of about 40 thermal units in the nation,
has already secured business performance capability equivalent to advanced technology powerhouses in the 500MW-class coal-fired power plant field. It is now developing the next-generation, 1,000MW-class coal-fired power plant model. Out of thermal power units, designed by KOPEC, Poryong Thermal Power Units 3&4 and Taean Thermal Power Units 1&2 were selected as the "1996 Excellent Power Plants"and the "1996 Global Excellent Projects"by Electric Power International of the United States. Dangjin Thermal Power Units 1&2 won the "2001 Excellent Power Plant Awards"from Power Engineering of the United States. As a result, KOPEC's thermal power plant design technology has already been recognized globally.
On top of power plant design, KOPEC is carving out its own way in PM/CM business, radioactive waste disposal facility design, decommissioning nuclear reactors and environment businesses. No wonder that making the most of its experiences related to such mega-projects as nuclear power plant construction management,
KOPEC have played leading roles in the PM/CM sector of Incheon International Airport and Korean high-speed railway projects. The company has secured technological capabilities in such back-end business areas as radioactive waste disposal and nuclear reactor decommissioning that will emerge as futuristic, promising businesses. The company is working on the design of the planned radioactive waste disposal facility in Gyeongju whose plan was determined in the late 2005 finally after twists and turns. As the global nuclear power industry is entering a "renaissance of nuclear power"thanks to more stringent environmental requirements and crude oil price hikes, KOPEC is striving to expand into the United States and China with a potential of massive nuclear power plant projects and the Southeast Asian region, which is to introduce the first nuclear power plant.
As the United States is set to resume construction of nuclear power units, KOPEC has signed an agreement to provide technology consulting services to the NuStart Project with Westinghouse. The company demonstrated its accumulated technology power by dispatching technology personnel to Bechtel of the United States last year. Before that, KOPEC has offered technological assistance services to scores of nuclear power units in such countries as China, Taiwan and Canada. It has been successfully undertaken turn-key projects and offered design consulting and technological personnel support in thermal power plant and other projects in such countries as the Philippines, Nigeria and Israel. KOPEC plans to enter the foreign market as the prime contractor of power plant design projects through a cooperative network with KEPCO, KHNP, Doosan Heavy Industries and other relevant companies and institutions.
