'Sustainable Management'

New EWP CEO announces management policies during his inaugural speech

The following are excerpts of a speech Jung Tay-ho, CEO-president of Korea East-West Power Co. Ltd. (EWP), delivered during a ceremony marking his inauguration on April 3.
EWP has so far maintained a steady growth amid the waves of changes following the restructuring of the domestic electric power industry. Such a outcome is owed to your officers and staff's enthusiastic and dedicated efforts.
We live in an era of changes and innovations. At this moment, all companies have to reposition themselves through changes and innovations for survival. Through them, they are striving to explore new markets.
As it comes to the electric power market where competition is mounting, our company is no exception. We have to take the lead in changing ourselves on our own and raise competitiveness and prepare for the future.
If all of us join forces through mutual understanding and empathy, we can tide over a swirl of changes in a wise manner and put our company on a solid foundation.
With such a hope in mind, let me present management directions we have to implement together.
First, I will strive to pursue creative, value-oriented management. Reflecting on the roads EWP have trodden in the past, I see that we have surmounted difficulties with more reserved strengths and firmer will than any other power companies, I'm confident that we can achieve a sustainable growth.
I will strive to raise our corporative value with a creative mindset witch which EWP can leap one more level up.
To this end, we will endeavor not only to pursue eco-friendly management by recognizing a better awareness toward environmental preservation but also to implement a sustainable management that allows customers, employees, local community and cooperative companies with "win-win"advantages.
We're trying to make EWP the most efficient, best company by raising productivity through maximizing efficiency. EWP will endeavor to create such new growth engines as renewable energy development projects and overseas exploration projects in order to foster its future competitiveness. .
Secondly, we are committed to ensuring ethical management in a dramatic fashion. As the moral demands toward corporations are being heightened in the development of society, integrity is emerging as a quite more essential element of public companies, the subject of public trust and envy, like our company. We will strive to ensure ethical management in an innovative way to establish a solid moral and ethical foundation based on right principles and to meet the demands of the times.
On an internal front, I strive to establish a fair and transparent personnel management system lest any moral hazards related to personnel management should take place and make sure that those who sincerely fulfill their entrusted duties can be provided opportunities.
We will endeavor to further raise integrity levels of EWP, which ranks the highest level of integrity among the power companies and revamp systems on a continuous basis and implement education programs.
In addition, we have to bear in mid our mission of stabilizing a supply of quality electricity to customers even if we are faced with too much poor and hard things and make concerted efforts to realize a goal of moving customers.
Thirdly, I will pursue harmonious human-oriented management. Humans are the most essential element of the corporation. Even if excellent systems and equipment are in place, it would be useless if staff members fail to become one. The corporation cannot exist without staff members, so the company and staff members coexist. Likewise, management and the trade union can evolve together when they try to understand each other. Relationships between management and labor can no longer be swayed by a theory of force. We have to build up trust and respect through active dialogues based on mutual understanding and respect. I will make management and labor make amicable ties by raising an awareness toward a common destiny.
I will provide support to any one who is willing to develop his or her own capability. I will endeavor to raise EWP's competitiveness by scouting gifted manpower and establish a life-time educational system.
In addition, I will strive to make EWP a worksite full of trust and pride where hard-working people are respected and given a preferential treatment. nw
