'Transparent, Reliable Company'

KHNP President Kim discloses his top management policies during his inauguration

Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) CEO-President Kim Jong-shin said his company will dramatically raise transparency in the operation of nuclear power units and attach top priority to ensuring safety in a bid to gain public recognition and trust.
The following are the excerpts of a speech he delivered while taking the helm at the electric power company on April 3.
Korea's nuclear power industry has made remarkable strides as it accounts for about 40 percent of the total domestic electric power supply and ranks sixth in the world in terms of facility capacity. I understand that such a brilliant growth is owed to our predecessors, colleagues and juniors who have toiled and sweated despite difficulties hey faced in the past. I extend thank-you and praise to my predecessors as well as my officers and staff who have spared no efforts to achieve such a remarkable growth.
My hope is that KHNP will proactively correspond to the demands of the times as a major public company, contribute to the state and society and evolve itself into a respected worksite that can imbue all members with a sense of pride and dignity.
We are beset with such pending issues as the continuity of the long-standing Kori Nuclear Power Unit 1, construction of radioactive waste treatment station, relocation of KHNP headquarters to Gyeongju, outside receptivity of high-level radioactive waste and environmental issues over the construction of Doam Dam we have to urgently tackle.
In order to solve the pending issues in a smooth manner and march forward, it more important for each of the staff to make his or her utmost to achieve our company's management goals. In doing so, I solicit you to take a more aggressive, enterprising attitude, departing from the negative and overlooking one.
The work system related to nuclear power is advanced, but we need to reflect on the past about whether there were any malpractices. All of us will have to recognize that ethical management is an indispensable element for corporate survival, and I will handle it as my top priority task during my term.
The continuous development of nuclear power cannot be expected without trust from people and neighborhood residents. It is also the same with hydro electric power for which we are responsible. I will throw my heart and soul into having candid and warm-hearted talks with people, listing to neighborhood residents speaking and build up coexistence relationships with the relevant districts.
Labor and management seem like both wheels of the "management"cart, and my hope is that labor and management can make concerted efforts to solve pending issues. Corporate development and improved welfare of staffs are common goals of both labor and management. Let's make concerted efforts to establish a mature labor-management culture by holding candid, open- and warm-hearted conversations to achieve the common goals.
During the 1970s when nuclear power was introduced into the nation , foreigners put capital and technology at their disposal, so we were left on the sideline insufficient to get technology. However, our nation's nuclear power technology has reached the world's top levels in terms of experiences, expertise and manpower.
Our company is willing to aggressively penetrate the foreign market in sync with KEPCO by concentrating all nuclear power resources from industry, academy and research circles. I will raise the nation and our company's profile by mobilizing our company's growth engines at the possible fullest and actively participate in efforts to secure uranium to ensure a stable supply of nuclear fuel in a bid to lay a foundation for a leap into a global corporation.
To make these dreams come true, I want to implement the following management policies.
First, my foremost thing is to ensure the safe operation of nuclear power units. Of late, a series of stoppage and safety accidents are blamed for a failure to follow basic rules and procedures. KHNP is striving to establish a thorough awareness toward safety and culture to prevent a repeat of such safety-related accidents.
Secondly, KHNP endeavors to usher in an era of nuclear power with people.
Thirdly, we pursue eco-friendly management and continue to implement renewable energy projects.
Fourthly, KHNP strives to achieve a goal of becoming a super blue-chip company through continuous management innovation.
Fifthly, we plan to actively participate in social contribution activities as a public company.
Sixthly, KHNP is trying to be engage in active overseas exploration of nuclear power businesses. nw
