DPM Kim delivers a speech at the 22nd KAIF/KNS confab
About 500 prominent figures from atomic energy circles from Korea and 12 countries got together at the Sheraton Walker Hill Hotel in Seoul to attend the 22nd KAIF/KNS Annual Conference on April 16-18.
In a congratulatory speech during an opening ceremony on April 17, Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of Science and Technology Kim Woo-sik said, "Many countries, including advanced states, are reducing its dependence on fossil fuel energy sources, and they are increasingly turning to nuclear energy as an alternative option. Of late, following the signing of the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement, the atomic energy industry should promote both multilateral relationships with such institutions and IAEA and international ties with major countries, including the United States. Korea should aggressively push for its entry to the global nuclear power market through improved competitive edge."The 22nd KAIF/KNS Annual Conference was jointly organized by Korea Atomic Industrial Forum (KAIF) (Chairman Lee Won-gul) and Korea Nuclear Society (KNS) (President Kim Si-hwan).
KAIF Chairman Lee, concurrently KEPCO chairman-CEO, gave an opening speech during the opening ceremony.
Five speakers delivered keynote addresses during the opening ceremony. Koh Jung-sik, deputy minister of Energy & Resources Policy Office at the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and energy spoke about the "Current Status and Future Prospects of Energy Resources Policy in Korea." Alain Bugat, CEO-Chairman of French Atomic Energy Commission. "Current Status and Prospects of France's Nuclear Sector and France's Vision of the Nuclear Renaissance throughout the World"; Shunsuke Kondo, chairman of Atomic Energy Commission in Japn, "An Overview of Japan's Nuclear Energy Policy"; Alistair Ruiters, chairman of PBMR project in South Africa, "Current Status and Future Prospects of Nuclear Industry in South Africa"; and Khalid Ghanim Al Ali, secretary general of the Supreme Council for Environmental & Natural Reserves in Qatar,"About 40 theses were presented in seven areas, including "Operation and Maintenance of Nuclear Power Plants," "Design, Engineering, Manufacturing and Construction of Nuclear Power Plants," "Technology for Generation and Utilization of Radiation," "Nuclear Fuel Cycle," "Economics of Nuclear Power,"
"Nuclear Safety and Regulation,"and "Enhanced Future Applications of Nuclear Science and Technology."The 2007 Seoul Nuclear Industry Exhibition was held on April 16-18 as the side event of the KAIF/ANS Annual Conference. The exhibition was a good opportunity to get the information on the new technology and science in the global nuclear industry. Exhibitors included SAMCHANG Enterprise Co., Korea Power Engineering Co. (KOPEC), Korea Plant Service & Engineering Co. (KPS). Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), Korea Nuclear Fuel Co. (KNFC) and Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI), Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), Westinghouse Electric LLC, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction and AREVA.
A ceremony for presenting the 2007 Atomic Energy Technology Awards with those who have contributed to the development of the domestic atomic energy industry was held before the start of the KAIF/ANS Annual Conference. The prime minister award went to Doh Ui-soon, chief of ISI Team at KPS, while the Shin-Won-song, a on-site team of Daewoo E&C and Choi Young-hwan, a senior researcher of Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, were presented with the minister of science and technology award. nw
