Chairman & CEO Kim puts more energy into making management innovative

Samyang Corp, celebrating 83rd anniversary of founding this year, is one of Korea's long-standing conglomerates. Kim Yoon, 54, a third-generation CEO of the group founder, Kim Yeonsu, has been reorganizing its business portfolio into such core growth business areas as chemicals, medicines and new businesses according to a long-term vision he declared in 2004 following his inauguration as chairman of the business group.
He has been credited with having made strides in business performances through such active management activities as the development of a new corporate identity (CI) designed to realign its corporate image. Thanks to the diversification of businesses, business structure update and global strategies for growth. They have paid off: achieving more than 10 percent growth per annum.
Of late, Samyang has been increasingly turned to an outward growth by exploring futuristic growth industries through M&As. In this vein, the company has acquired a processed fat company,
disposed of bakery business and bought a family restaurant to step up its presence in the dining industry. Samyang has stepped up globalization by building such plants as an engineering plastic compounding plant in Shanghai and a starch sugar factory in Qinhuangdao.
CEO Kim has been carrying out massive management innovations to build up an optimum work process for creating the value for customers. Samyang has established ERP, CRM, SCM and Shared Service Organization (SSD) to simplify and standardize work process as well as ensure corporate innovations and productivity improvement. The company has made strategic investments for reducing energy costs and maximizing equipment efficiency while implementing projects of reusing such waste resources as waste water and steam. Samsung has taken green measures to conserve energy by introducing energy reduction processes.
Samyang has been staging quality management and customer satisfaction activities by improving work processes in all areas ranging from production to sales and support on a constant basis and beef up quality management. The company has been taking the lead in quality management, value management and eco-friendly management initiatives as it has acquired quality systems, environment systems, such food sanitation-related certificates as HACCP, KS, ISO22000, Eco-friendly Corporation Award and KGMP certificate in the pharmaceutical field.
As it comes to labor-management relationships, Samyang has been establishing an amicable, cooperative structure. The company has set a good example of labor-management ties as it has never been suffering from labor disturbances since the late 1990s. Currently, four business sites have maintained productive and cooperative labor-management ties through dialogues with an open-minded attitude and transparent management. For instance, its Ulsan plant has become the recipient of the Order of Industrial Service, Gold Tower.
Samyang has been making strenuous efforts to make its corporate image future ¡ª and customer-oriented with the goal of creating its new corporate image. In particular, in 2004, the company has launched a new CI to realign its corporate image, while it have been aggressively conducting its public relations activities by placing TV commercials designed to raise familiarity to customers. Q-1, the integrated food brand released by Samyang as one of the nation's longest, representative brands with a 80-year history, has become a hit.
Chairman Kim has been proactively involved in such social contribution activities as environment protection activities, scholarships and academic study support, social welfare and volunteering activities.
In recognition of his having accomplished feats: achieved a more than 10 percent growth rate through management innovations and spearheaded corporate social responsibly by exploring such new markets as cancer treatment medicines, CEO Kim was awarded with the coveted Order of Industrial Service, Gold Tower.
Pharmaceutical Business Units
Samyang's Pharmaceutical Business Unit, in collaboration with Samyang's central research center, is engaged in the development and marketing of novel drug delivery systems and medical devices.
Samyang is focusing its efforts on healthcare as its core strategic business for the 21st century. Samyang is developing proprietary and unique core technologies for the development of world class novel drug delivery systems.
In 1996 the company completed construction of its ultra modern, KGMP-approved pharmaceutical formulation plant in Daeduk and started business activity with several transdermal patches.
Daeduk Pharmaceutical & Medical Devices Plant
DaeDuk Pharmaceutical & Medical Devices Plant is an up-to-date manufacturing facility equipped to produce novel DDS formulations and medical devices.
The plant was established in July 1996, and approved KGMP manufacturer in November 1996. The plant also gained ISO9001 accreditation in August 1999.
Pharmaceutical R&D Center
The Samyang Pharmaceuticals R&D Center aims to become world class research center for research in drug delivery systems.
Utilizing many experiences and know-how within the Samyang Group in the field of polymer chemistry and fine chemicals and also with a close collaboration with international partners, the center is making rapid progress in developing several innovative dosage forms to deliver drugs more conveniently, efficiently and accurately. nw
