'Creative, Innovative,
Change Leaders'

KHNP President Lee unveils four tasks KHNP will implement to make the year 2007 a dynamic one

Lee Joong-jae, president of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP), urged his executives and staff to become "creative, innovative and change leaders." "Our KHNP staff's challenging spirit has transformed the nation without nuclear power plants into the world's sixth largest nuclear power state in 30 years. I'm confident that the '2nd and 3rd Myths'will be followed to firm up energy security and to this end, we all have to be creative, innovative and change leaders,"KHNP President Lee said in his New Year's message at the KHNP headquarters on January 2.
President Lee has unveiled four tasks KHNP will implement to make the year 2007 a dynamic year and another myth.
First, the KHNP president called for raising safety and reliability of nuclear power plants. KHNP needs to make sure that every nook and corner of each nuclear power plant has a firm consciousness toward safety, has no human errors and maintains nuclear facilities in an optimum form, he said. Raising safety and reliability of nuclear power plants is more essential than ever before at a time when there is still such much work to be done as the construction of a nuclear waste treatment center and relocation of KHNP head office, he said.
Second, President Lee urged his staff to establish operation technologies of nuclear power plants.
Futurist Alvin Toffler indicated that our society cannot develop unless society and institutions are innovated by securing creative and gifted manpower, and the company seems to be the case: it cannot evolve into a super world-class firm unless it nurtures gifted manpower and innovates diverse processes, he noted. Lee stressed that KHNP has to develop a companywide support regime for furnishing advanced operational technologies of nuclear power plants and secure the leadership of innovating nuclear power operation.
Third, he called for an increase in public acceptance of nuclear power plants under a mid- and long-term perspective. It is an urgent task to raise public acceptance of nuclear power, and in this regard, KHNP will strive to develop a friendly network to sound out public opinions, while implementing local district management aimed at raising the local community's acceptance of nuclear power.
Fourth, KHNP President Lee called for internalization of management innovation. KHNP staff members have made concerted efforts to secure the world's top class competitiveness through strenuous management innovation, and now is time when they have to make innovations part of their daily business life, he said. Lee stressed that unless innovations are part of their daily business life, the achievements innovations have so far brought could revert to the past, and "innovations are not only for others, but also for me and the future of the company."Reflecting on last year, KHNP President Lee said KHNP staff members devoted themselves to fulfill their duties by providing a stable supply of cheaper and quality electricity despite unstable crude oil price hikes and nationalistic moves to make energy national resources.
KHNP has worked hard to stabilize the operation of nuclear power units, while concentrating its energy into the construction of new nuclear units ¡ª Shinkori Units 1 & 2 and Shinwolsong Units 1 & 2 ¡ª without a hitch.
KHNP has struggled to achieve the national dream of exporting Korea's first nuclear power. The company obtained the environmental management system certificate ISO 14001 to lay a foundation for becoming an environmentally-friendly company. nw
