Vice Chairman Lee M.K. wins World Women Award for first Asian woman


Vice Chairman Lee Mi-kyung of CJ Entertainment won the Business Award of the 2006 Women's Award for the first time as an Asian woman. She was presented with the prestigious award on Oct. 14 at the Manhattan Center of the Hammerstein Ballroom. Vice Chairman Lee from January of last year has been managing the media and entertainment sector of the CJ Group, especially its global business area. The World Women's Award was launched in 2000 by Georg Kindel, an Austrian author and this year was the third year of award, which was created for the purpose of promotion of equality and independence for women. The recipients of the award included TV personality Oprah Winfrey in recognition for her outstanding achievement as a woman leader.
Georg Kindel is chairman of the World Women's Award Committee with former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev as committee chairman. The award committee said Vice Chairman Lee has made CJ Entertainment a global brand and her ability raised her company's business area over to the Internet and cable TV sectors, displaying her outstanding business sense as a business leader in explaining the presentation award to her. The committee also noted that she has done a lot for charity work including the contribution to cancer research aside from her business achievement. She also did very much to introducing Korea to the United States, the committee also said. The committee presented awards to winners in the 12 categories, including actresses Sharon Stone and Woopy Goldberg in the charity category.
The presentation of the award used to be made in Europe, but this year it moved to New York and the colorful award ceremony and its side events were covered by world media and broadcast on television. John Cossette, who produced the Grammy awards, also produced the award ceremony.
CJ Entertainment belongs to CJ Group one of its 59 affiliates and 28 overseas network in diversified areas of business including foodstuff, sugar, flour, cooking oil, processed food, animal feed additives, entertainment media, home shopping and logistics. nw
