Asiana Ushers in
'Aviation Paperless Era'

Installs electronic flight bags for pilots of B777s

Asiana Airlines has decided to install electronic flight bags (EFB) for pilots of B777s, ushering in an 'Aviation paperless era'for the first time in Korea.
The Korean national-flag carrier inked a deal on the purchase of Class 3 EFB with Boeing of the United States on July 26.
EPBs refers to cockpit personal computers for pilots capable of providing huge amounts of information with pilots like flight manuals, airport information, moving maps and aircraft performance manuals. The new system will enable pilots to process data in a more convenient and safe manner, easing the burden of carrying necessary documents in their own bags.
Asiana Airlines officials said the EFB system will not only calculate engine power, take-off and landing performance and the center of gravity in a more precise fashion, thus making up for human error, but also prevent possible accidents via the Moving Map, a kind of navigator, using a Global Positioning System (GPS) while traveling within the complex precincts of airports.

Dan da Silva, vice president of Boeing Co., said, "I'm very happy to see Asiana Airlines installing Class 3 EFB on its flights. He expressed hope that Asiana Airlines, which is striving to become one of the best airlines with continuous investments and innovation, and Boeing will work toward co-prosperity.
Asiana Airlines will initially have B777s installed with EFBs to improve flight safety. The airliner plans to expand the new system to cover other types of aircraft with the goal of improving profitability via cost cuts and improving flight safety.
