Ethnic Korean Scientists
KOFST organizes the 16th Global Convention of Ethnic Korean Scientists and Engineers 2006 in celebration of the 40th anniversary of its founding
About 1,000 scientists and engineers, including 300 ethnic Korean scientists and engineers from abroad got together to participate in the 16th Global Convention of Ethnic Korean Scientists and Engineers 2006 that opened for a four-day run on July 20 at COEX in Seoul.
The Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies (KOFST) organized the 16th Global Convention of Ethnic Korean Scientists and Engineers in celebration of the 40th anniversary of KOFST's founding.
Among the prominent overseas scientists and engineers on hand at the global convention were Prof. Kim Shin-jae, of the University of Louisville, who was recognized for her tutorial behind a vaccine for cervical cancer, Kim Jong-hoon, president of Lucent Technologies, Ham Don-hee,
who was appointed as a professor at Havard University at the age of 28.
The purpose of the conference is to build a network of organic, mutual and cooperative exchanges among ethnic Korean scientists and engineers by raising Korea's scientific and technological exchanges by initiating mutual and cooperative exchanges. Also,
the purpose included the formation of large responses and seeks desired proposal alternatives for major national science and technology agenda items, and to devise a means of further advancements of science and technology groups from within Korea and abroad.Deputy Prime Minister-Minister of Science and Technology Kim Woo-shik said in his opening ceremony remarks ethnic Korean scientists and engineers have demonstrated ethnic Koreans'excellence and creativity in each country of the world, thus contributing to the development of their motherland.
"This is another part of Hallyu, or the Korean Wave, serving as an opportunity for scientist and engineers to have close exchanges with ethnic Korean scientists and engineers from abroad, Deputy Prime Minister Lee said.In his speech at a dinner for the participating ethnic Korean scientists and engineers, Deputy Prime Minister Kim said he explained the Korean government's science and technology policies designed to cement a competitive edge during the 21st century. To this end, he commented the significance of S&T Global Networking.
Chae Young-bog, president of KOFST, said he extended a hearty thank-you to ethnic Korean scientists and engineers who visited their motherlandand he expressed the hope that the participants of this conference would renew their mission of the times and discuss their roles of the past and the future in a sincere and ambitious manner.
The conference was comprised of a Plenary Session, General Session, S&T Poster Session, KCIST Sessions, Young Generation forum and General Convention of Associations of Ethnic Korean Scientists and Engineers. nw
