Moojin Kiyeon clinches Gold Award for localizing nuclear power technology
The Moojin Kiyeon Co.(President Cho Seong-jin) recently won the 13th Korea Nuclear Power Technology Gold Award in recognition of the company's success in localization of nuclear power generation facilities for the past 15 years.
The company's president Cho said he would not be able to forget the day that the announcement was made on his company's winning the award. "Not for a long, long time,"he said, excited about the award.
He and the entire employees of the company thank the Korea Hydro Nuclear Power Co. and its president Lee Joong-jae for their courageous decision to give the award to them.
He said he set up and operated Moojin for 15 years with 10 years of experience for his having worked for the machinery industry in the country following completing his college degree in engineering.
Moojin has been able to accumulate engineering expertise in many areas of the machinery industry through its dealings with many companies in those areas including machinery parts, automobile, and battery companies.
The company provided automation systems to these companies. Other areas included cement production equipment, tire production facilities, printing machinery, textile machinery, and space and aviation companies, totaling some 40 companies. They helped Moojin become an integrated machinery production company with outstanding technologies.
Moojin owes its award to its success in localizing the spent fuel dry system for supply to No. 3 & 4 Wolsung nuclear power stations at half the prices charged by the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL), which supplied key nuclear reactors for No.1 & 2 Wolsung nuclear power stations.
AECL asked for quotations from Moojin for its SFDS to be used for its nuclear power stations to be built in China and the company complied encouraged by AECL's suggestion that Moojin could be able to provide SFDS with its nuclear power projects elsewhere in the world. Moojin and its employees were delighted at the news because it meant that its SFDS has won the recognition in the world for its excellent quality. Moojin owes its success to the high level of technology on the part of its engineers, president Cho said, adding that officials and workers at Moojin worked day and night to meet the delivery date and test & inspection requirements.
Cho said the production cost of the facilities ran over budget due to rises in the price of raw material by around 40 percent and the delivery date was too short with the equipment weighing about 100 tons. The company built a structure to place the equipment on it for testing at the KHNP.
KHNP engineers conducted tests on raw material at Moojin's plant and inspection of production process. They also conducted the test-run of the equipment after its completion of production and another inspection when the equipment was delivered to the Wolsung No.2 nuclear power station.
AECL engineers also visited Moojin plant to inspect the production and testing process of the system. They concluded that the quality of the system was excellent at the end of the inspection. President Cho recalled that their evaluation of the system has given an immense pride that the company and its employees finally succeeded in localizing the system. The Canadian engineers again visited the Moojin plant even after the system was installed at the Wolsung nuclear power plant to confirm that the system meets the standard and specification of AECL. The AECL engineers asked Moojin engineers to take the system to China to install it at a nuclear power station they are building in the neighboring country, which really reconfirmed that Moojin's SFDS is good enough to be exported.
These developments were instrumental in Moojin's winning the award, Cho said, adding that he will try hard to have AECL to open the way for Moojin export its SFDS to China through negotiations.
President Cho also said Moojin will do its best to localize other nuclear power equipment to make its contribution to the development of the nuclear power industry in the country. nw
