Hanwha Group Extends a Helping
Hand to Underprivileged Children
Sets aside 13 billion won for diverse social service activity programs for 2006
Hanwha Business Group's social service activities date back to 1999 when Hanwha Chairman Kim Seung-youn floated a plan to make a two nights and three days sojourn to Sokcho to aid handicapped children from the Han Love Village in an effort to help them realize their dreams.
Since then, the conglomerate has expanded its social service activities from the production of Braille calendars to the sponsoring of numerous symphony concerts.
In 2002; the year marking the celebration of the 50th anniversary of its founding that the business group embarked on social service activities in earnest under the catch phrase "Friend of Love, Friend of the Future and the Corporation that Fosters Next-Generation Hanwha,"a campaign designed to "return to society love from people and society."The "A Happy World to Live Together,"and "Children of Dream Fields,"just to name a few are representative programs the business group has conducted with the goal of making contributions to society. The "A Happy World to Live Together"is a program for handicapped children as well as non-handicapped children. The business group is operating it alongside Save the Children, a children welfare organization. Social service bodies from Hanwha Group hold cultural events and rehabilitation programs for the handicapped children and non-handicapped children with the goal of ending discrimination against handicapped children and achieving social integration. The program will cost the business group 800 million won and 3,000 executives and staff members from the group's 48 work sites across the nation are expected to visit 25 children nurseries and 25 handicapped children's houses to conduct social service activities.
The "Children of Dream Fields"is a program the business group operates with World Vision, another social welfare agency, to provide support for underprivileged children, including ones from poor families. About 1,500 Hanwha executives and staff members from the group's 14 work sites participate in the program designed to provide a helping hand to the children at World Vision youth centers and 13 other welfare centers. The business group sets aside 400 million for the program during this year and plans to spend an additional 1.2 billion won for the next three years.
Korea Life Insurance and Shindonga Fire & Marine Insurance, the financial affiliates of the business group, also plan to provide children from poor families with opportunities to study the economy and acquire field experience.
The business group has implemented a project to support study rooms as another social service program that began in 2003. Starting this year, each affiliate company will be charged with carrying out the project independently, with 200 million won being contributed by a separate fund-raising association for social welfare.
Currently, Hanwha Group operates approximately 600 volunteers'programs in five categories social welfare, culture & arts, volunteering services and environmental preservation and sisterhood relationships.
Some 24,000 man-days were utilized in diverse social service activities during just last year. The average Hanwha employee spent more than 11 hours conducting volunteer activities. The business group has allocated 13 billion won in its budget for conducting social service activities during this year only.
Meanwhile, Hanwha executives and staff members have donated funds for conducting social service activities on their own. The Fund for Making a Bright World is a donation program under which each employee sets aside a given portion of their salaries as a campaign designed to give a helping hand to families enduring hardships. Each company of the staff members contributes additional money in proportion to their donations. About 90 percent of the group's payroll participates in the donation program. nw
