KOSPO Launches Hadong
Thermal Units 7, 8
The planned units will be equipped with high-efficient, eco-friendly instruments
Korea Southern Power Co. has embarked upon the Hadong Thermal Power Units 7 & 8 project. About 200 people participated in a ceremony marking the launch of the project at the Hadong Thermal Power Complex in at Gadeok-ni, Geumseong-myeon, Hadong-gun, South Gyeongsang Province. Among those on hand at the groundbreaking ceremony on June 12 were KOSPO President-CEO Kim Sang-kab and Cho Jung-kyu, vice chief of Hadong County.
Currently, the Hadong Thermal Power Complex has maintained a capacity of 3,000,000kW (500,000kWx6 units) since its dedication in 2001. Units 7 & 8, each an improved Korean coal-fired thermal power plant with a power generation capacity of 500,000 kW, will be built on the existing complex site. Unit 7 is to be dedicated in December 2008, while completion of Unit 8 is scheduled for June 2009.
The planned Units 7 & 8 project will cost KOSPO 1.11 trillion won.
The ultra-super critical power units are highly efficient as they can cut down on fuel power generation costs,
improve heat efficiency and share the auxiliary facilities of Hadong Thermal Power Units 1 through 6.
The high-tech units will be equipped with such eco-friendly equipment as desulfurization, denitrification, electric precipitation instruments, fugitive dust control equipment for a coal storage pile and integrated waste treatment facilities. Air and water pollution prevention instruments will be operated for automatic around-the-clock monitoring.
The dedication of Hadong Units 7 & 8 will bring Complex to 4 million kW the capacity of the Hadong Nuclear Power Plant, contributing to a stable supply of power to the southern region of the nation, creating jobs - 2 million man-days per annum during the construction period and reinvigorating the local economy.
The project introduces the "Island Turn-Key"method for the first time in Korea in which a separate bidding is held for boiler, turbine and yard, and each successful bidder is overall in charge of design, equipment and materials supply and construction. The new system is designed to cut down on workload and construction length.
In his speech during the ceremony, KOSPO President Kim urged his staff to strive to make the planned Units 7 & 8 world-class, high-quality and eco-friendly ones by making sure accidents are free and safe environment is established on top of meeting the construction deadline. He also applauded his staff's obtaining a consensus from neighborhood residents. nw
